Steps

  1. Go For tutoring Tutoring really really helps. Even one hour helps so much that you could go ahead and add 20 odd marks to your result just with going for tuition.
  2. Go to class. Attend every single class, no matter how boring or inconvenient. And as long as you're there, you might as well listen and take useful notes.
  3. Do your homework. Now, the homework component of your grade is not usually enough to make the difference between passing and failing -- assuming you do spectacularly well on tests and long-term projects -- but the point of homework is to reinforce the lessons of the class so that you do perform well on those tests.
  4. Study. This is not the same thing as "cram". Reviewing your notes, returned homework and assigned readings on a regular basis will help you keep on top of the course material. This helps prevent those nightmare situations where it's the night before a big test and you have no idea where to begin studying.
  5. Attend the instructor's office hours. If there are no regular office hours, ask if you can come in on your lunch break, before or after school, during a study hall, or some other time that's convenient for your teacher. Before you get there, try to pinpoint exactly what it is that's giving you trouble, and ask questions based on that. Don't be afraid of looking stupid. Your professor will admire your dedication, whether you have major gaps in your understanding or not.
  6. Devote sufficient time to the classwork and homework. If you have only one or two very difficult classes and several easier ones, you may need to set aside more time for the one or two than for all the others combined. That's okay.

Tips

  • Get enough sleep. Sleep deprivation wreaks havoc on your attention span, plus your ability to listen and synthesize information. Coffee is no substitute for giving your brain proper rest.
  • If all else fails, consider dropping the class. Or if that's impossible, consider dropping another class or extracurricular activity so you'll have more time and energy to devote to the problematic class.
  • Remember, you don't have to like a class to pass it.
  • Work the System, know how your instructor grades assignment/tests and how assignment/tests count toward your final grade. Often low tests can be dropped or assignments may only be a small fraction of your final grade.
  • If you find yourself do poorly in class ask your instructor about Extra Credit you can get points added to scores on exams/tests and your instructor will know you care enough about the subject.
