Before undertaking any painting job, you need to do certain preparation, and as they say, when it comes to painting a house, a well-prepared wall is the battle half won.
The preparation starts with repairing the wall. Here, we’ll be talking about the most common surface flaws, and we’ll guide you in getting rid of them. We’ll give you a list of tools that you will need to level out the defects from the walls. So, are you ready? Let’s get started!

Fixing The Poppes Nail
This is first in the list to go. Popped nails look bad and embarrassing. In most of the newer homes, gypsum wallboards are used to surface the wall. These wallboards have another name, drywall. Nail popping is one of the most common problems faced by drywalls. With the aging of the wood studs, drywalls screws and nails loosen up and pop out creating inconvenience for us. That’s it. No more tolerating popped nails, let’s get started and fix this problem, once and for all.

Tools
You will need following tools to get the work done.
  • Hammer or screwdriver
  • Sandpaper
  • Paintbrushes
  • Putty knife
  • Nail set
  • Drywall nails and/or screws
  • Spackling compound
  • Paint or primer

    How To
Keep everything handy and start working.

    STEP1
The first step in the process is to put the nail back in its place, re-drive it.
  • Pull the popping nail out
  • Hold the nail set straight, in the centre, over the nail head and hammer it.
  • Keep on hammering till nail gets completely inside the stud.
  • Repeat the process with all the popped-out nails.
When you hammer it, the nail head holes through the drywall’s paper layer (outer layer), and enters into drywall.
Same process can be used with drywalls screws. In some cases, when the head is separated from its shaft, you should dig the head and remove it from the drywall.

It’s easy to find if the head is separated from the shaft or not. If the screw keeps on spinning, on the application of screwdriver, without any resistance, than your fear is true, head is separated from the shaft.

    STEP2
You’ve successfully fixed the popped nail, but the work is not done yet. What if the nail pops out again? And can this nail bear the complete weight? Indeed, your worries are legitimate. Let’s put one more nail, two inches either above or below the old nail. This new nail will take weight off the old nail.
Use same method as described in step one, except pulling the popping nail step, as there is no nail to pull out. Hammer the nail till it goes inside the drywall. Once it’s gone, hit one more time but with less force. This is done to dimple the surface around the nail. It’s easy to do this with drywall screws, they will countersink on their own.

    STEP3
Take the putty knife to fill the hole, and cover the nails heads with spackling compound.

    STEP4
Allow the compound to dry. Use sand paper to sand the area. Spackling compound has a tendency to shrink when it dries out. Repeat the Step3 two or three times followed by sanding the area, until the surface levels off.
Now use your paintbrush to apply primer or paint on the patches.

    Repairing Cracked Plaster
As we are done with the popped-nail problem, we should move towards repairing cracked plasters.
It’s not uncommon to find lath-and-plaster walls around us. It was very in much use in yesteryears. Plaster is durable material and provides a good-looking surface as well. But as with everything else, plaster too gives, it’s share of headache. Over the period of time, it develops cracks.

At times, these cracks are very stubborn and keep on showing their annoying faces even after the cover-ups.
Latex paints can be used to hide hairline cracks but as suggested above, only temporarily. It may last for months or it may die in an hour.

What’s the solution? Enlarge the cracks! It’s not a whacky idea. This is the most sensible thing to do. Fixing a bigger crack in the plaster is easier than attempting to repair a smaller crack.
Get premixed plaster repair compound from the nearest paint shop or buy some plaster of paris. That’s it, you are on the job.

    Tools
To fix this flaw, you’ll need following tools to get the work done.
  • Utility knife
  • Paintbrushes
  • Scraper or trowel
  • Plaster of Paris or premixed plaster repair compound
  • Wood block
  • Medium- or fine-grade sandpaper
  • Primer
  • Paint

    STEP1
Use utility knife to do away with the loose plaster. Use the dexterously and make a clear-line opening in the plaster crack.

    STEP 2
Make a thick paste by mixing Plaster of Paris with water. Once it is done, use paintbrush, dipped in water, to wet the crack. Once the crack is completely wet, pack the crack to its full depth using the Plaster of Paris (or use the premixed plaster repair compound). Use trowel or scraper to smoothen the surface. Give it 24 hours to dry.

    STEP 3
Take the wood block and wrap it with medium-or fine-grade sandpaper. Gently, Sand the cracked area.
If the crack was very wide, repeat the process written in step 2, follow the exact instruction written there.

    STEP 4
Do the sanding again, and apply a thin coat of primer.

    STEP 5
Paint the entire wall after the prime dries out.

    Repairing Holes On Drywalls
Now, we are done with repairing cracked plasters as well. Our next target is drywell holes.
Drywall looks sturdy but it has very limited capability, when it comes to handling the wear and tear. This surface get damaged quite easily, even a door flung opened with force will make a hole in the drywall. Painting the dented surface is not a solution. But even finding the solution is not easy.

Just hit the nearest home improvement store and get a drywall repair kit. But before leaving for the shop, measure the size of hole, as these kits come in different shapes and sizes and even for different purposes. For example, a drywall patch for the wall is much thinner than the one used for patching the ceiling.
Take off loose plaster or paper from the edges of the hole, prior to applying the drywall patch. Read the label for manufacturer’s instructions and begin repairing.

I won’t suggest you to go for any DIY (Do It Yourself) technique for this repairing work. This is a complicated joband need specialists’ attention. Using DIY technique to fix this problem has a huge opportunity cost, in terms of both time and money.

Find a good company in your locality and seek help from them. They are professionally qualified to tackle such complicated (house repairing and house painting) jobs. Just, put the keywords like, house repair, house painter, wall painting, painting contractor etc. in your favourite search engine and wait for the result.

    Scrubbing and Sanding Walls
Scrubbing and sanding is used on the surface that has a previous paint on it, newly primed walls won’t need it.
This is an extensive process, and it takes time. Remove all the furniture, fixtures, light fixtures, drapes, drapery hardware, etc. from the room that require scrubbing and sanding. Now, start looking for the flaws on the wall, look for paint peelings, rough areas, or chipped areas on the wall.
