Steps

  1. Learn the phonetic pronunciation of the French alphabet. Learn these in the order given. The suggested sounds are:
    • A (ah), B (bay), C (say), D (day), E (euh), F (ef), G (zjee),
    • H (ahsh), I (ee), J (zgee), K (kaw), L (eluh), M (emuh), N (en),
    • O (oh), P (pay), Q (ku), R (ehrr), S (ess), T (tay), U (oo),
    • V (vay), W (doobleuh-vay), X (eeks), Y (ee-grek), Z (zed sounds like "ted").
  2. Purchase a CD-Rom for French beginners. Check that it contains the alphabet; most will have this as basic information. Use this to imitate the sounds as the native speaker says them.
  3. Revisit the alphabet even when you know it. It is always useful to be able to spell your name, an address or the name of a brand etc. It can be easy to forget the basics.

Tips

  • Practice whenever possible.
  • Ask for help by French speakers. They will know what to help you on, and make you a better French speaker.
  • If your school offers classes for French, take them if you really want to learn tons of French!
  • French teachers will really appreciate it if you use the French alphabet to spell words instead of English.
  • A way to learn this quickly is to write the letters on one side of a card and the pronunciation on the other side. Practice with these in any spare time you have.

Warnings

  • You can easily forget the basics. To avoid this, practice practice practice!
  • Do not attempt to sound out French words using these letters, as often there will be accents which change the sound, silent letters, and different sounds than how the letter is pronounced in the alphabet.
  • Pronunciations may not be perfect and, if possible, ask a French person to say the alphabet for you.

Things You'll Need

  • Dedication
  • A will to learn
  • Time
