Steps

  1. Turn your wine bottles into pencil holders. Once you've finished your wine, fill it up with water. Squeeze some soap into it while it's full of water for about three seconds. Then put your palm over the opening and shake the bottle until it's full of suds. After about thirty seconds of this, empty out the water. Then roll a piece of paper towel into a long rod. Stick this in the bottle, and absorb as many soap suds as possible. Stick it upside down in a strainer overnight for it to dry. The next day, it should be dry. Simply put your pens and pencils in, and enjoy your recycled wine bottle!
  2. Make wine bottle art. Read the article on wine bottle art, and hang up the brand names as art. This is a great decoration to any home!
  3. Create a message in a bottle! Just write something on a piece of note paper, roll it up, and stick it in the bottle. Leave the bottle in front of a friend's room, and watch what they do from afar. You could also make it more of a time capsule, and hide it under your bed for a year.
  4. Make wine bottle cups. Light a tea candle, and put it on a secure surface. Hold the wine bottle horizontally over the candle so the flame just barely touches the middle of the bottle. Hold the wine bottle's ends with both hands, and slowly rotate the bottle over the flame, as if the flame was cutting around the wine bottle. After about five minutes of this, the wine bottle should have cleanly cut in half. If it hasn't done this after five minutes, run the section under cold water. It will break in half if it hasn't already. The edges are extremely sharp after this process, so use sand paper to smooth out the edges. Although you are cutting it in half, this only makes one cup.
  5. Make a wind chime with the other half. Carefully drill two holes across from each other on the spout side of the half. Slide a thick string or cord through these holes. Tie this string onto a support system above it, such as a hook. Get a thin piece of wood along with a four inch piece of string. Drill a hole through the top of the wood, and slip the string through it. Tie a knot so it won't come out, and tie the other side of the string to the cord that is holding the bottle up. Align the string in the middle of the bottle, and wait for the wind!
  6. Recycle your bottle. If you don't want to do anything else with your bottle, make sure you recycle it. Find out when recycling day is in your community, and be sure to have your bottles out by then. In some states, you can get money back for recycling!

Warnings

  • Make sure that you thoroughly clean out the wine bottle before a project, especially if you're doing it with a child.
  • It's not a good idea to drink excessively just to recycle your bottles. Always drink responsibly.
