You don't have to know much about a vehicle in order to change a water pump, though it can be somewhat challenging. It is one of the few keys to keep your engine running smoothly and efficiently.
  1. The first step to replacing your water pump is to disconnect you battery and drain all the coolant from your radiator.
  2. The second step is locating the water pump. The water pump is located on the front of the motor. On front wheel drive vehicles the water pump can be located by the serpentine belt and its accessories. On rear wheel drives it will be located behind the fan and its pulleys.
  3. Once located it is time to grab the tools that you will need: ratchet and sockets and your new parts. The sizes of the sockets will vary depending on your vehicle.
  4. Get everything out of the way to remove the water pump. If you are replacing a water pump on a front wheel drive you will need to remove the serpentine belt, pulleys, and any wires and harness in the way. On a rear wheel drive you will need to remove the fan, fan pulley, power steering pump, radiator hoses, alternator, and anything else that might stand in the way of the water pump except the crank pulley.
  5. It's time to put that ratchet and socket to work. Remove all the bolts anchoring the water pump to the engine block. There are usually six.
  6. Once the old water pump is off, clean the engine block where it was located either with a scraper or a solvent.
  7. On your new water pump use some RTV glue on the surface where the new gasket will be going.
  8. While you are letting the glue dry, you can double check the engine block to make sure it is clean from glue and gasket that might cause problems with installing and the running of your new water pump.
  9. Once the glue on the water pump and gasket are adhered a little bit, apply some glue to the engine block where you will be installing the new water pump. Be sure not to break or squish the new gasket.
  10. Replace all of the bolts. Use a torque wrench to get the proper tightness of the bolt. You can find the information for that in the Chilton's book about your car.
  11. Replace all of the pulleys, pumps, hoses, belts and parts that were removed earlier in the process. Be sure not to forget to refill your radiator with coolant!!! Dispose of the coolant properly and recycle your old water pump by returning it to the store where you bought your new one.
Once all of this is done you are ready to hit the road again and cruise in confidence!
