Steps

  1. Take good lecture notes. Make your notes clean and through. Some instructors also post lecture notes or copies of PowerPoint presentations on their website.
  2. Organize your notes by category. You can either do this by putting sticky tabs in your notebook, or by filing the note pages in labeled folders.
  3. 'Re-read your notes after each lecture, highlighting important ideas.
  4. Make a note of anything you don't understand when you're going back over your notes. Ask the instructor, and write down the answer.
  5. Re-write your notes with all the details included. Add annotations from your textbook or other sources to supplement the information.
  6. Distill the information into two categories: Major Concepts and Supporting Examples. For example, a major concept might be "Impressionist painters were more concerned with conveying emotion than representing form", while your supporting example might be "Van Gogh's 'Starry Night' uses exaggerated forms to convey a sense of wildness and wonder".
  7. Make this information into a narrative. Embed important information, such as dates, causes, and long-term effects, into the narrative. For example, you might compress the main concepts of several lectures to say: "Because of strong isolationist sentiments created by WWI, Americans were reluctant to enter WWI. However, FDR used covert legislation, such as the Lend-Lease Act, to support the Allies".
  8. Quiz yourself with questions related to the lecture notes.
