Steps

  1. Identify the reader. The most effective essay allows the reader to identify, understand and hopefully agree with the author.
  2. Start with two broad sentences that will make the thesis to apply to your audience.
  3. Write an essay that allows the reader to see the problem from the author's point of view. Use information which is understandable to the targeted audience and gradually persuade them to believe what is written. Provide appropriate documentation for the audience involved. For example: Present air quality reports, photos, and appropriate documentation to an audience interested in air quality.
  4. Create an essay that provides collaboration between the author and reader. Write so both the author and reader grow together while reading what is written.
  5. Write clearly and concisely. Make the text easy to read. Stay away from long-winded and abstract writing.
  6. Provide accurate sources. Use current writing standards to document all primary and secondary sources. A primary source is the original source of information. This can come from interviews or from a direct source such as a public speech. A secondary source is from a written document or newspaper report.
  7. Write fairly and without a slant.
  8. Another type of persuasive essay is to cite the opposing viewpoint. Divide the thesis in two parts. The first part acknowledges and writes about the opposing view The second part shows why your opinion is the stronger and more valid viewpoint.
  9. Give yourself at least two days for writing the thesis.
  10. Spell and grammar check (manually), then reread for content to make sure you make sense. Wait a day, and spell check again (you can never do this too many time), presentation is everything.

Tips

  • There are many ways to write an argumentative or persuasive essay. Follow your instructor's syllabus, handouts and textbook to write a good essay.
  • Go to office hours to ask questions about how to write the essay.
  • Ask a librarian for assistance.
  • Avoid words like should, could, would. They weaken your arguement.
  • Do not use personal pronouns (such as I, we, you, and etc). Remember, this isn't about you and your friends personally, and there is no reason to point a finger at a reader in your thesis.
  • Change all [I]'s and [you]'s to one, for example: I think, change to One may think.
