At first, LoveLetter seemed like just another cutesy computer virus that spreads extremely quickly by automatically sending itself to e-mail addresses contained in the infected user's address book. Melissa was the first virus to replicate itself in this manner, and like most of the viruses that have emerged since, it really can't do a great deal of harm to the infected user's computer.

LoveLetter has actually proven to be a different beast entirely, and some of its variants are even more crafty and dangerous than the original (see our accompanying news feature for more information on LoveLetter and its many variants). These viruses pack a punch strong enough to completely disable your computer, and for this reason LoveLetter is no joke (no pun intended of course).

Thankfully, the major virus scanner vendors have been quick to release virus definition updates that detect and remove LoveLetter and most or all of its variants. Even better, a freeware utility is now available that has been specifically designed to ferret out and eliminate

The LoveLetter Virus Cleaner

The I-Worm.LoveLetter Virus Cleaner from Just Strategys is the first utility we've discovered that's been specifically designed to scan for and remove the LoveLetter family of viruses. This freeware utility has been updated constantly over the last few days as variant after variant of LoveLetter has hit the Web. At present, the LoveLetter Virus Cleaner detects and cleans the original virus as well as the following variants: A,B,C,D,E,F,G,H,I,J,K,L,M,N,O,P,Q,R,S,T,U, and V (take a look at Symantec's LoveLetter Web page for additional information on each of the variants).

Downloading, installing, and operating the LoveLetter Virus Cleaner is a quick and simple process. After installation and upon running the cleaner, you're presented with a dialog to scan and/or clean your computer. The cleaner will first scan your system to detect whether LoveLetter or one of its variants is present. If the scan is successful, the virus cleaner will proceed to remove the virus from your computer.

We haven't had the opportunity to remove LoveLetter using the LoveLetter Virus Cleaner, so we're not entirely sure how effective it is in restoring your computer to its previous state (i.e. before it contracted the virus). Overall, if you don't currently own a virus scanner and are looking for the quickest - and the least expensive - solution for detecting and/or removing the LoveLetter family of viruses, we highly recommend the I-Worm.LoveLetter Virus Cleaner.
