If outer space aliens landed in front of you and offered you any job you wanted on their planet, what job would you request?

Author: Robert

This is another think outside the box question. The interviewer uses questions like this to measure creativity, willingness to discuss or answer out of the way subjects, and even how people think in general. Have some fun with this answer, but not too much fun. The answer can set either a positive or negative tone, even if the question seems silly.

Marketing: “I'd take head of marketing. They need to be more visible – why do aliens always appear in the middle of nowhere? Try the middle of New York city guys!”

Mechanic: “I'd become their chief engineer. I don't know if I could help them, but I'd sure learn a lot.”

Make sure to mention a job related to your field, even the very job for which you're interviewing.

Installer: “I'd take the job installing their translation devices around the world. If they're ready to reveal themselves, they'll need a way to communicate.”

Teacher: “I'd lead the cross-cultural effort by teaching their children about our planet. That's the first step to good relations.”

Clothing Retail: “I'd be the manager of their costume department. They need clothes so they can fit in on Earth.”

Even though it's a light hearted question, don't give a hint that maybe you're in the wrong career. In addition, this isn't time to put down other professions.

Sales: “I get tired of sales, so I'd take the job as their head of PR. Those marketing people don't do much except make up things out of thin air. I can do that.”

With bad luck, the interviewer turns out to work in marketing. But with the right explanation, mentioning a different career is a plus.

Sales: “I'd like to lead their marketing team, of course I'd tell them to pick up a good marketing person to show me the ropes. I think sales people don't know enough about marketing people, and vice versa. This would be a great time to work together.”

Teacher: “I'd become their school superintendent. I think teachers complain a lot about the board side of education. I'm not saying teachers are always wrong, but I bet I'd get some good insight from doing that job.”

One of the most creative answers ever given was: “First, I'd change my shorts because I'd have wet them. Then I would travel with them so I could get others to wet their pants”

Sure it was creative, but it wasn't really appropriate for a job interview. That job candidate was all wet. Get it?
