Introduction to Rapid-Acting Insulin

(NC)—Patients with diabetes who need a rapid-acting insulin at mealtime can now benefit from a new treatment option. Apidra is a rapid-acting insulin that can be used either within 15 minutes before or within 20 minutes after starting a meal, to safely and effectively lower blood sugar levels, which can “spike” after a meal.

Apidra is designed for the treatment of type 1 and type 2 diabetes to control blood sugar spikes that accompany meals. It can be used in addition to a long-acting insulin to better control blood glucose at certain times of the day.

“From a patient perspective, having that dosing flexibility is important as it allows them to match their insulin injections to their lifestyle,” said Winnipeg's Lori Berard, diabetes nurse educator. “For example, in a restaurant setting, it may not be possible to time the injection 15 minutes before a meal, so having the option to take it 20 minutes after starting a meal allows patients to have more flexibility while being able to follow their diabetes treatment plan”.

Another advantage of Apidra is the delivery device – the Apidra SoloSTAR pre-filled insulin injection pen. Apidra SoloSTAR provides patients with a more convenient way to take insulin, as there is no need to load and change injection cartridges. The device also features a low injection force and a dial back safety feature to correct dose selection errors.
