Introscope could be used by IT personnel to identify performance bottlenecks in Web applications. Introscope is from Wily Technology, which in March, 2006 was acquired by-and is now a division of-CA.
Introscope is an agent based platform. Agents continuously monitor and collect metrics from existing applications, application components, and servers; and transmit that data to the Collector Enterprise Manager. According to the vendor, no changes are required to the applications themselves; and the platform is able to automatically discover and monitor performance and availability of all Java components and their relationships, including EJBs, JSPs, Servlets, Classes, Methods, and more. On the .NET side, the platform can automatically discover and monitor .NET components including ASP.NET, Enterprise Services, Directory Services, .NET Messaging, .NET Remoting, and their relationships.
For non-Java application monitoring, the Introscope Environment Performance Agent (EPA) allows Introscope to be adapted to monitor applications, and a provided Data API allows for the incorporation of external data into the Introscope platform.
The Collector Enterprise Manager receives metrics from one or multiple agents, and then forwards them to the main "MOM" (Manager of Managers) Enterprise Manager.
Once collected, the MOM Enterprise Manager stores the data in its DB for further analysis by provided or third-party reporting tools. Tools provided for accessing the data include WebView, a Web-browser based interface; a Java workstation component; and integration with existing system management platforms via alerts and/or events. Out-of-the-box reports include those for application performance analysis, service level agreement administration, and capacity planning.
To this base platform, the vendor offers several extension tools that enhance the product's capabilities. Among the currently available extensions are:
- The Browser Response Time (BRT) Adapter; which monitors transactions end-to-end, from browser to back-end systems. The vendor notes that the BRT adapter requires no additional hardware and utilizes no synthetic transactions.
- LeakHunter specifically targets memory leaks in J2EE applications.
- ErrorDetector provides for the detection, analysis, and root cause determination of serious errors that prevent end users from completing transactions.
- Wily SOA Manager, the newest entry in the product family, which specifically targets the management and monitoring of Web services. Features include automatic identification of dependencies among Web services, transaction auditing and verification, health monitoring of underlying components, and customizable reporting. Wily SOA Manager is expected to support platforms including Apache Axis, BEA WebLogic Server, IBM WebSphere Application Server, NetWeaver and the Microsoft .NET Framework.
In addition to the core product offerings, Introscope is also available in a number of "PowerPacks," which are designed and pre-configured (including dashboards and alerts) for specific application environments.
