2. Backsplashes

Kitchen backsplash tiles and other backsplashes have been in use for a very long time and is the complimentary way to protect the wall that kitchen cabinets are installed against. There are a number of differences in style, material, and applications. Materials range from plastic laminates to stone. The difference in design has a great deal to do with individual taste and budget. While some materials are relatively inexpensive, they can be quite a challenge to apply.

Obviously, doing your homework on the various types of material and their difficulty in application is the determining factor for most consumers. Knowing what the process involves can alleviate stress levels and make the do-it-yourself home owner feel a lot better on a job well done. Apprehensiveness can shake confidence and cause the do-it-yourself home owner to make mistakes during the application process. This can cause unwanted expense as it takes time to remove the mistake from the wall and purchase new material and start over.

Researching the type of backsplash a consumer desires to add to their kitchen countertop will aid in its installation. Preparation is as important as the installation of the material used. A clean, dry surface free from oils and dirt makes the main difference regardless of the material a consumer chooses to install. The reason for this common denominator is that all of the materials available require some type of adhesive and all adhesives lose a certain amount of their integrity if applied to a spot that has oil or dirt on it.

3. Choosing Material for Kitchen Backsplashes

This can be a challenging part of the process involved in adding a backsplash to kitchen countertops. However, it can be a very rewarding part of the process. It is highly recommended that ample time is given to this step as it will be the one that will make all the difference in the look and style of a kitchen. Since there are a number of materials available for backsplashes in general, taking the time to investigate each is a prudent idea.

Laminates are the most commonly used material for backsplashes and can be the most challenging of all. This is due to the fact that it only comes in sheets. The standard measurement between the top of the counter to the under side of the wall cabinets is 18 inches. However, the slightest variance in this measurement will cause a level of difficulty that a consumer will experience. When installing any type of backsplash it is recommended that a measurement every foot or so be taken. Once this is done a more precise line can be drawn on the top edge of the sheet good. By using a belt sander the edge can be scribed to make a better fit. An alternative to the belt sander is a very sharp knife blade. Scraping the edge of the sheet good with a blade at a slight angle will remove material and offers more control of the material removed. Other materials use similar methods in preparation. Some may require special equipment, and in many cases, they can be rented.

4. Purchasing Laminates for a Kitchen Backsplash

Installing laminates is the most challenging of the kitchen backsplash options available. Careful application can make this a pleasant experience, though, and is the quickest way to install a backsplash in the kitchen. Take measurements the full length of the countertop where the backsplash is to be installed. Even though most kitchens have an 18 inch space between countertop and the underside of the wall cabinets, it is recommended that this measurement be taken along with the length.

Purchasing the laminate at a local builder-supply establishment can be as easy as giving the name of the color/style desired and supplying the measurements needed. In some cases you can wait for them to cut your pieces, but it is more common to have to wait for them to order it for you. In many states this is the only option available for a consumer to purchase laminate goods.

One other product required for laminates is an inside corner trim that will cover the area where the laminate comes into contact with the countertop. This allows for a slight variance in the material in that area. The inside corner is usually a peel and stick product that is easily applied.
