Originally published at Internet.comThe Linksys Wireless-G IP Phone line consists of telephone handsets that can be used in conjunction with VoIP providers. (Required VoIP service is not included with the phones; it's available separately from 3rd-party service providers). The handsets themselves resemble mobile telephones, including a color (65K) LCD display and a numeric and navigation key pad. They're targeted primarily to service providers; who would resell the phone in conjunction with service packages.
The phones connect to the network not via cellular connections, however. Instead, they connect directly to a local IP network via built-in support for 802.11b/g. Baseline requirements to use the phones, therefore, include a broadband Internet connection (Cable, DSL, etc.), a WiFi router or access point with a DHCP server, and an activated VoIP service; all of which are provided separately.
Initially, two phones are included in the line, with the vendor noting that additional WiFi phones will be released in the second half of 2006. Both of the initial offerings support SIP v2 and 802.11b/g.
- WIP300: The WIP300 features the vendor's SES (SecureEasySetup), which allows for the automatic configuration and connection of the device to a Linksys Wireless-G router by pressing a button on the device and then pressing a corresponding button on the router; the connection is then established using a custom SSID and WPA encryption. Connections to other routers are possible; though not with the pushbutton SES functionality. The WIP300 additionally features a 1.8 inch TFT/LCD screen (128x160); 16MB Flash and 12MB SRAM memory; WEP, WPA, WPA2, TKIP; an embedded antenna sporting an operating range of up to 200 meters outdoors and 75 meters indoors; and telephony features including call hold and resume, caller ID presentation, call transfer, call waiting and retrieve, and more.
- WIP330: The WIP330 lacks the SES setup capbility; but is designed for connectivity not only to home and office WLANs but facilitates connections to public hotspots, as well. Features include a 2.2 inch QVGA TFT/LCD screen (240x320); 32MB Flash and 64MB SDRAM memory; WEP, and WPA-PSK security; an embedded antenna sporting an operating range of up to 300 meters outdoors; QoS (ToS) support; and extended telephony features including 3-way conferencing, peer-to-peer dialing, and more. Additionally, the WIP330 includes a built-in browser (IE) for Web surfing and can receive and view live video feeds.
The WIP300 and WIP330 phones are available now, with estimated street prices of $219.99 and $369.99 respectively.
