Making Parents Understand Positive Reinforcement Washington DC

Positive reinforcement is an effective way to get people to cooperate. However, parents don't always understand that positive reinforcement is beneficial for all ages (adults included!).

Steps

  1. Talk to your parents about your learning style and needs.
    • Open by recognizing your parents are trying their best. Say: " I know you guys work really hard as parents, and you want to make sure you do the right thing."
    • Express your learning needs. Say: "I learn better through positive reinforcement."
    • Explain why that's important. Say: "I want to make you happy, and it's easier for me to do well if you reward me for things I do well as well as punishing me when I mess up."
    • Don't whine!
    • Stay calm and collected; you want to show your parents that you're being mature and logical.
  2. Show a good response the first time your parents reward good behavior. For instance, if they've let you extend your curfew by a half hour because you got on the honor roll, make sure you're not late coming home and don't abuse your new hours. Also, work even harder at the thing that got you the reward-- if you're on the honor roll, try for a perfect GPA. This will show your parents that you were right.

Tips

  • Don't whine about punishments-- it will make you sound immature and your parents will think you're just trying to weasel your way out of being grounded.
