A good sleep is critical to having a productive life; since this is the time your body rests and renews itself for a fresh day of activity. Where you sleep is just as important as how much you sleep. This is where the importance of buying a good mattress comes in. A good mattress will provide the correct support and comfort to make your slumber time peaceful and effective. Follow the guidelines set down below to find out how you can choose the right mattress for your needs.

STEP 2:

Types of mattresses. Now that you're ready to shop for a new mattress, there is some amount of prior information which will make your search for the ideal mattress, that much easier. Over a period of time, advances in science and technology have also had their effects on sleep sets such as beds, mattresses and pillows. Mattresses now come in different types, with frequent changes in shape, contour and insulation, as technology continues to advance. Here are some of the different types of mattresses for your reference:

  • Innerspring: This is the most common and widely used type of mattress. It is built with numerous configurations of steel coils, filled and covered with insulation and cushioning made up of material such as upholstery, cotton, foam or other types of thick fabrics.
  • Foam: Another popular choice, foam mattresses can be made of either a single thick piece of foam, or from laminating several layers of foam together. Materials used for the foam cover the range of various plastics, such as latex, polyurethane, visco-elastic foams with a ‘memory', as also fabrics like cotton, wool, etc. Visco-elastic foams are new-generation technology, where the foam ‘remembers' and adjusts itself to shape the contours of your body when you sleep, to provide the most comfortable sleep you've ever had!
  • Airbeds and waterbeds: These are designed and shaped like traditional mattresses, but the inner core is filled with either air or water. While considering an air or water bed, it is important to look at the quality of construction and stitching, since these are susceptible to sudden damage or wear and tear.
  • Futons: Futons serve a dual purpose - seating during the day, and a mattress during the night. These are extremely flexible and usually made of cotton, silk, synthetic fibres or foam.

STEP 3:

Mattress sizes. Mattresses come in many sizes, choose the one which suits your needs best.

  • Full or double size - About 53 inches wide and 75 inches long and are meant to accommodate two people; which is fine if you don't care about your personal space and are less than 5.5 feet in height. Ideally, a double is best used by a single person, particularly if you have children. Children grow a lot over a period of time, so investing in a full mattress at the time your child is 10-12 years old is a good idea.
  • Twin or single - These are about 38 inches wide and about 75 inches long, ideal for a single person, who does not require too much space.
  • Queen size - the dimensions of a queen-sized mattress is about 60 by 80 inches and it is a good choice for your guest rooms or smaller bedrooms.
  • King size - 76 inches wide and about 80 inches long, these are the best option for tall people, or for two people with enough personal space. The downside of a king-size mattress is the manoeuvrability, because of the size and dimensions, it is difficult to fit these mattresses through doorways and exits.
With these few simple guidelines, you should have no trouble going out and buying that new mattress. Remember to check for the manufacturer and dealer warranties, also follow the care and maintenance suggestion listed with the product to get the best use out of your mattress.
