Route1 offers a remote access platform-centered around their MobiKEY product and MobiNET service-that allows mobile users to access a corporate Windows PC via an authenticated, encrypted connection.

The core platform consists of three primary components: The MobiHOST software, which runs on the host computer and enables it to be used from a remote access point; the MobiKEY device, a USB dongle that can be plugged into an existing Internet connected Windows 2000/XP/2003 terminal, enabling that terminal to be used to access the corporate host PC; and the vendor-hosted MobiNET service, a subscription service which provides two-factor authentication features and facilitates connectivity from the remote to the host PC. The vendor notes that the platform protects data; in that neither the data nor the applications on the corporate PC are actually stored on the remote PC, and communications between the remote and host PCs are protected by up to 256-bit SSL encryption.

To use the platform, the user first sets up the MobiHOST software on their corporate PC (the one they wish to be able to access from a remote location), a process that registers them with the vendor's hosted MobiNET service. When at a remote location, the user can then access their host PC from any remote Windows-based PC by plugging in their MobiKEY dongle. They are asked to provide a password, which is authenticated using smart-card technology on the MobiKEY itself; and the MobiKEY then initiates a connection with MobiNET, which returns to the user a list of their available host computers (each MobiKEY can be setup to access at least 5 separate host computers). After selecting the host computer they wish to access, the MobiNET service then communicates with the host computer (the host computer polls MobiNET for connection requests), sending to it the connection information. The host computer then completes the connection by querying the remote computer and establishing a direct, encrypted communication channel between the host and remote PCs.

The MobiKEY itself is a USB 2.0 (backwards compatible with 1.1) dongle that includes support for 128 bit AES encryption and RSA/SHA-1 signing (256 bit AES encryption and SHA-2 are optionally available).

Other products available in the Route1 product suite are MobiVDI-or Virtual Desktop Infrastructure-in which users can access virtual desktops hosted within the data center via their MobiKEYs; and the newest entry, the MobiKEY Administration and Provisioning portal (MAP) which brings the ability to manage individual MobiKEY users; including such capabilities as adding and removing users, revoking certificates, performing usage audits and tracking, modifying user rights and privileges, and the creation of access policies controlling connections to enterprise resources, access to remote printing capabilities, and the number of hosts that can be used with each MobiKEY.

The MobiKEY product and MobiNET service are available now; a single key, which includes a year of MobiNET service, is priced at $399. MAP pricing begins at $500/year for 1-100 users, with volume discounting from there.
