All you have to remember is 1 down and 3 up. Shifting a motorcycle is the same principle as shifting a car. Push in the clutch, move the stick shifter, let out clutch. There are two hand levers on the motorcycle the one on the left operates the clutch and on the right, you control the front brakes. And two foot pedals that change gears and operates the back brake.

However, the motorcycle is the opposite of shifting a car.

  1. Let out the hand lever clutch. After you have pulled in the left lever, use your left foot to move the shift lever from neutral down one position and engage firs gear. Slowly let out the clutch (left hand lever) and apply a twisting action on the gas throttle with your right hand.
  2. Once you have started moving let off the throttle. Grab the handlebar lever on the left side, squeeze it until it hits the left handlebar. Using your left foot, place your toe under the shift lever and in one motion swivel your foot upwards. The first position you come to is Neutral. Keep moving your left foot upward and you will go into second gear. Let out the clutch and apply gas with the throttle.
  3. Once you reach about 15 mph, let off the throttle. Grab and squeeze the clutch lever, put toe under the shift lever and move upward - you are now in third gear. Release the clutch lever and slowly twist the throttle.
  4. Once you're going about 25 mph, grasp the clutch lever and squeeze. Let the throttle roll forward, place the toe under the shift lever and shift upward to reach fourth gear. Slowly release the clutch lever and apply gas via the throttle. If you have more than four gears on your motorcycle, repeat the process until the final gear is reached.

Remember at the beginning, one down and three up. Starting in neutral, one down is first gear, four up is 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears. You are now cruising down the interstate, with that song "Gonna Take a Three Day Cruise" blaring in your head. Wearing a helmet, of course.
