Originally published at Internet.comPart of Motorola's MOTOwi4 lineup of wireless access gear (which also includes the MOTOMESH, wi4 Fixed and wi4 Indoor product families) the MOTOwi4 WiMAX collection of products and services seek to enable service providers to offer WiMAX compatible wireless services to their subscribers, in the licensed 2.5, 3.5, and 2.3 GHz frequency spectrums. Based on the 802.16e-2005 standards, the gear will allow customers to access wireless services from providers-including Internet and voice-over an all-IP-based infrastructure using WiMAX compatible devices in both fixed and mobile scenarios.
Key products in the WiMAX portfolio include:
- The WAP 400 and 800 series access points, which feature MIMO-technology and redundancy features. The WAP 800, in particular, leverages the vendor's "smart antenna RF technology," providing extended range and capacity to the base offering.
- The APC 1000 Access Point Controller, which provides and consolidates for an existing carrier the functions of authentication and (optional) mobility.
- The WiMAX Operations and Management System (WiMAX OAM), for the management and operation of the WiMAX deployment.
- Both indoor and outdoor Customer Premise Equipment (CPE), including PC cards, mobile PDAs, and handsets.
On this latest point, the vendor has announced the addition of the CPEi 100 desktop device to the product family; a single-port 2.5 GHz desktop device that associates with a WiMAX network and enables a desktop PC to connect to and communicate over it. The device is expected to be available in 2008.
