Antron Brown wins NHRA O’Reilly Spring Nationals; Hamilton still leads F1 Standings despite 5th place finish in Malaysia
Antron Brown of Indianapolis, Indiana won the first top fuel meet of his career winning in the Top Fuel Class at the NHRA O'Reilly Spring Nationals in Houston, Texas on March 30. Brown survived exceptionally close races against Doug Foley and Cory McClenathan in the first two rounds behind the wheel of his Matco Tools sponsored dragster. After he squeaked out a win over Doug Kalitta in the semi-finals, Brown posted a final round win over Larry Dixon in the finals by just a mere .0044 seconds.
JR Todd failed to qualify for Sunday's eliminations.
Both Brown and Todd are in the NHRA Top 15 in Top Fuel driver's points. Brown is 3rd with 279 points and Todd is 14th with 108 points. In Pro Stock Motorcycle, 21-year old Edward Murphy of Bridgeport, Connecticut is 12th in points with 62. Murphy was eliminated in the first round at the O'Reilly Nationals losing to Andrew Hines.
The next NHRA meet will also be in Las Vegas, Nevada at the Summit Racing.com Nationals on April10-13.
Harold Martin, who had a strong showing at the American Drag Racing League's opener down at the Drag Illustrated Dragapalooza down in Houston, Texas on March 7-9. He will compete in the IHRA season opener at the Amale Oil Texas Nationals on April 4-6 down in San Antonio and in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the ADRL Shelor.com Spring Drags on April 25-26
Despite being penalized for a ‘qualifying error' during March 22 qualifying for the Malaysian Grand Prix, British driver Lewis Hamilton managed a fifth place finish during the race on Sunday, March 23 to hold on to the lead in the FIA F1 World Championship Driver's Standings with 14 points. Hamilton and his teammate Heikki Kovalaninen of Finland qualified their McLaren-Mercedes Benz racers in the second row, (Kovalanien third, Hamilton fourth), but a penalty claimed by the FIA officials put them back in the eighth (Kovalaninen) and ninth (Hamilton) positions.
The F1 circuit heads to the Bahrain GP on April 6.
