Tips on how to move into your new home, the right way

Author: Jenny Smith

Moving house can be a stressful time and sometimes some of the most important things can be forgotten. So here are some tips on how to move into your new home the right way.

Packing always seems like a chore when trying to remember what to pack and deciding what to keep and lose so it doesn’t clutter your new home. However, it has to be done. Make sure that you have decided on what to take to your new home and what to throw away long before you move so you won’t be rushed into your decisions.

With the items that are in good condition but are not needed anymore, consider giving them away to friends and family or even to charity shops so you’re sure that nothing good has gone to waste. Get boxes, newspaper and bubble wrap well in advance too, so you know how much you need for the final day.

Get as much help as possible from friends and family including any vans that they may have to help you out or any extra car space. To hire a van may be cheaper in the week day but at weekends there will be more people around to help you out so consider weighing up your options.

Why not make a plan on the computer/paper of where your furniture is going in your new home, not only will this help the removal men know where to place it and asses what doorways it will fit through, it will also allow you to find any empty spaces to fill or whether some rooms may look cluttered.

If you have decided to start from fresh and buy all your furniture once you are in your new home or you are moving out of someone’s else home such as parents etc so you have hardly any items to take with you, you may need to consider short term furniture until you can afford the right furnishings or find the best ones to suit your home.

Friends and family may be helpful in providing you with things they don’t need or old unused furniture but why settle for second best when you can have brand new modern furniture as soon as you need it.

Furniture rental or furniture hire gives you the opportunity to choose what furniture to hire and how long you need it. Not only will it also be cheaper than purchasing your furnishings but a majority of companies deliver the items, help to set them up and pick them up whenever you wish.

Save yourself some hassle when you move into your new home.

2 . Protecting Furniture During the Move

Furniture pads that are quilted and have cotton filler are key to protecting any wooden items such as dressers, bedroom sets, tables, chairs, etc. Shrink-wrap can be used as an extra layer of protection after the furniture pad is put over the item and can help keep the furniture pad secured in place. Shrink-wrap can also help keep dresser drawers from falling out and protect fabric couches from dirt and moisture.

Mattress, couch, and chair bags made from thin plastic material are recommended to prevent dirt and moisture from ruining your valuable fabric items. Pictures and mirrors should be packed in picture boxes or mirror cartons and bubble wrap can be used to help further protect these items. Dishes and valuable should be carefully packed using packing paper, packing peanuts and bubble wrap in sturdy boxes.

Hanging clothes are to be moved in wardrobe boxes. A tall, sturdy box with a hanging rod inside that allows the clothes to hang freely without becoming wrinkled. Ratchet tie-down straps or other tie-downs such as rope are also recommended to help secure your items within the truck and avoid shifting during transit.
