Gradually over the past few weeks, your newborn has become more used to the outside world and to moving around freely outside of the limited space of the womb. Your newborn may be smiling by the end of this month. If not by then, look for this to happen in the next few weeks. Your baby's first smiles feel like a reward for doing such a great job.

  • Listen for your newborn to begin making some different cooing sounds. Respond to these with enthusiasm, and you will be rewarded with more cooing. Engage your baby in "conversation" by imitating these cooing sounds. All of this interaction lays the foundation for the development of speech later on
  • Look for your baby to begin staying awake for longer periods of time. He may be more awake in the early part of the evening and seem to cry a little more - (your baby may not, lucky you!)
  • On average, newborn babies cry for about 1-2 hours a day. Always offer comfort by rocking gently or letting him suck. Crying is the only language at this age, so it's a good idea to pay attention and try to identify the cause
  • Babies at this age can keep their head up for a longer period of time when you gently hold them in a sitting position
  • If you touch your baby's hand with a rattle, she may react by moving her hand toward it. This is the beginning of learning how to reach out and grasp hold of an object

    What Your Newborn Loves

  • The sound of your voice and for you to imitate sounds
  • To hold things for a short period of time
  • Being carried
  • Lots of skin-to-skin cuddles
  • Listening to your voice
