Online exams include a variety of tests taken via the computer and over the Internet. Proctored exams can be similar to online or can be 'pen and paper' but have the additional security measure of a live person to confirm the identity of the student. This article explores a number of test models.

Model 1

The Traditional Proctored Model

This model includes the independent proctor in a controlled live setting. There are several advantages including sign-ins and verification, increased security to catch people cheating and because the proctor is independent there is more inclination to verify and authorize. The disadvantages include testing centers are at central locations, the certifying agency has to put all of their testing sessions together and students have the expense of traveling to the testing site. Some agencies are leading the way for online proctored exams such as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) Video Security Systems Technician (VSS) testing, which is completely online.

Model 2

Distributed Testing Centers

Distributed testing centers provide nationwide access to proctored facilities. A relationship is established between the testing agency and the site in order to administer exams to students across the country. The advantage of this model is that it is convenient for students to take tests and organizations do not have to spend money on travel. Some disadvantages are that the proctor has no stake in the event so if there is a problem with the content they may not be able to support it. This model can also be expensive and the student must deal with a third party for enrollment and administration.

Model 3

Organizational Approved Proctor

With the organizational approved proctor the training or certifying agency allows a private organization to self-proctor. This is commonly done in a large organization which has many people to certify. The organization must have its own internal checks and balances for this system to be successful. One advantage to this model is that large corporations can get many technicians certified at once. Another is that the organization absorbs the costs for the certification process.

Model 4

Online Testing and Online Testing with Restrictions

The advantages of online testing include being able to reach a geographically diverse audience. Having the test available 24/7, students incur no travel costs. There is flexibility in test question methods as well as immediate grading. Some disadvantages with this model include security concerns of the actual test questions and effectively identifying students. With this model policies and procedures can be implemented to help secure an online test. These include opening it only at a specific time, password protecting the tests and phone-in verification of the student."

Model 5

Bringing Computing To the Live Proctor

Many distributed testing facilities combine the security of the live proctor with the flexibility and convenience of the online method. This model brings the proctor to the students via the Web. Video verification and biometrics are up and coming methods to ensure remote reliability. These technologies combined are the future of testing and exams.
