Cleaning the areas completely.

Make sure that you eliminate all the dirt and scattered debris in the affected areas by sweeping or blowing them away. Block the surrounding areas fully against all kinds of dirt and other materials that could penetrate through the garage door which will make your floor messy again.

Wash the whole surface to be painted by using a pressure washer after you are done with sweeping. Be very careful in using the pressure washer as the water can create damage to the concrete. Pressure washer equipment is available in rental centers if you don’t own one.

You can apply de-greaser solution in areas that are covered with thick grease and residues. Then, scrub the surface with a laundry brush and wash again with the pressure washer.

Make a thorough examination of your concrete floor.

Examine the surface very well to see if there are cracks and other defects. You have to repair them first before starting the next step, to produce good results.

You can use epoxy coating to fill and bond small cracks. You need crack filler or epoxy/concrete patching kit to repair bigger and deeper cracks. If it is necessary, you can grind the concrete to flatten big spots. Use epoxy patching compound and apply it by a trowel mix for low spots in the surface.

Apply etching on your concrete floor.

When pressure washing is done, apply de-greasing and repair the rough areas. There may be a need to etch your concrete floor to bind the epoxy floor coating and the concrete floor.

Mix an equal amount of muriatic acid and water, then, spread it all over the surface. Wait for 20 minutes before you rinse the floor with clean water to remove the mixture.

Know the mixing technique of your paint.

You have to know how to mix your epoxy paint. Pour the same amount of “Part A” and “Part B” into a 5-gallon plastic container to come up with a 2- gallon mix of epoxy. Mix the bottom of the container very well and do not lift the mixer or paddle in and out as this process may gather some air into the mixture. See to it that you mix the paint for 3 to 3 ½ minutes only to avoid drying.

Epoxy painting.

Start painting from the farthest point away from the door(s), using a paint brush. Paint your way out of the garage to allow you to move freely without walking in wet paint and transfer your materials without destroying the paint. Apply wet epoxy to areas painted with wet paint until the whole surface has been coated entirely. Paint in small proportions to avoid drying up of the epoxy paint. Wait for 2 to 3 hours before you start application of the 2nd coat to allow the first coating to dry.
