(NC)-The costs of post-secondary education - tuition, books and supplies, orientation-week fees, accommodation and transportation - can quickly add up and in today's economy, they may be challenging to afford.
There are many ways to help gather the necessary funds, including scholarships, bursaries, government student loans and student lines of credit. Teens can also be encouraged to find part-time jobs. Not only will a part-time job provide an extra income, it can also build a teen's self-worth and confidence as they contribute to their future.
Part-time jobs have come a long way in the past ten years. In addition to competitive salaries many companies also provide scholarship opportunities and awards to deserving employees. While the commitment required of part-time jobs can vary, many employers provide flexible work schedules that fit into the busy lifestyles of today's teens.
"I wanted to take on some of the responsibility for my education and my part-time job at McDonald's helped me do that," says Mallissa Mageau, a future Algonquin College student. "Not only did I earn a McDonald's scholarship that is helping pay my tuition, the flexible hours McDonald's offers will allow me to continue working part-time while in college."
Rewards offered by employers, whether financial or not, are just one more benefit of having a part-time job. Encouraging teens to obtain part-time work not only helps provide for their future education, but teaches them important lessons about personal finance as well.
