PowerTerm WebConnect provides a centrally managed platform that enables Windows and Linux client computers and thin clients to access applications hosted by Windows Terminal Servers, virtual servers, blade PCs, and/or legacy systems.

The primary components of the platform are a central server (in various flavors, depending on the task at hand), and client components (again, in various flavors) that are delivered/downloaded to the client machines as needed through Web browser-based connections to the Server. Administrators can connect to the PTWC Server (which can also interface with LDAP servers) and define user access rights and configuration settings to allowed hosted applications for their users; users then connect to the central server (initially via their browser; and later via desktop links if so configured) to receive the downloadable components and view/interact with the applications/hosts to which they are granted access.

Key components available in the full PowerTerm WebConnect arsenal include:

- The core PowerTerm WebConnect server, available in Windows or Linux flavors and facilitating RemoteView and HostView connections. An administration tool is also provided that can be installed on the same server or on a workstation

- The PowerTerm WebConnect DeskView Server, which enables the publication of desktops/applications running from virtual machines and physical machines

- The PowerTerm Load Balancer, which can be installed on the same machine as the server or on a separate server and facilitates load balancing among multiple host machines

- PowerTerm WebConnect Web Components, which provide a Web interface to applications published through the system

- Various client-side components which are typically downloaded on demand and facilitate specific types of remote access, including the key RemoteView client, for the accessing of Windows Terminal Server-based apps and virtual desktops; HostView, for terminal emulation access to legacy hosts; SupportView for remote desktop support; PrintView for the managing of print queues; and QuickVNC for remote desktop connections.

Other components include the Terminal Server Agent (loaded on each Terminal Server that will be accessed, and providing features including "True Seamless Windows," where delivered applications appear on the Windows desktop in the same manner as actual desktop apps; and application-based load balancing); the PowerTerm WebConnect Portlet for JSR 168 Portals; and the PowerTerm WebConnect Plugin for IBM Lotus Expeditor.

The primary purchase flavors of PowerTerm WebConnect offered by the vendor include:

- PowerTerm WebConnect HostView, a browser-based terminal emulation platform with support for over 35 terminal emulation types, including IBM 3270 and 5250, VT525, Tandem, HP, etc.

- PowerTerm WebConnect RemoteView, which provides client access to Windows Terminal Server farms

- PowerTerm WebConnect DeskView, which facilitates access to applications on virtual machines (not available with the Linux-based server)

- PowerTerm WebConnect Enterprise, which combines the features of the other packages

Also available from the vendor are two free specialized offerings. PowerTerm WebConnect for Oracle VM enables centrally managed access to apps on Oracle VM; while the new PowerTerm WebConnect for WS08 is focused specifically on providing access to apps running on Windows Server 2008 Terminal Services. The WS08 product, in particular, features centralized management, auditing, and logging; availability of published applications in the client's PowerTerm WebConnect Application Zone, the Start Menu, the system tray, or through a Web portal; and A/D integration for group-based management.
