RBackup, the flagship offering from Remote Backup Systems, allows you to backup your local data to a remote server over the Internet. The client/server platform is designed for Windows computers and is offered to both individual businesses and service providers who wish to provide remote backup services for their customers (branding is supported).

RBackup is a two-component platform: the client component resides on the customer's individual Windows machines that will be backed up; and the server component, which is loaded on a remote, Internet accessible offsite server, receives and stores the backup data from the client computers. Both components can be run as Windows Services on their respective machines. As part of a separately priced maintenance contract, the vendor offers a "Server Locator" service which identifies your backup server via a unique domain name and allows the client components to then find that server even if it happens to be behind a dynamically assigned IP address.

The client component allows for scheduled backups; selecting files that need to be backed up per an administrator (or customer) defined schedule and then compressing and encrypting (via a key known only by the client) those files for online transport to the RBackup Server. These compressed backup files are verified for integrity before, during, and after transmission. Multiple encryption methods are supported, including DES, 3DES, AES, and others.

The server then facilitates data restores (more below), and can additionally provide reports (for potential billing purposes on the part of a services provider) based on the size of the uploaded files or the amount of time each backup session took.

Data restores are also initiated by the client, who utilizes a restore menu built into the client component to tag files they want to restore; placing them back in their original or a new location on their local drives. Versioning is supported (the client can choose from multiple versions of the backed up file) and a File Finder feature facilitates selecting and working with groups of files via criteria including date, version, or directory.

A key new feature in the latest RBackup release is support for a "BitBackup" engine in which only the portion of each client data file that actually changed is sent to the remote server (along with some control information); i.e., if only a few bytes of a large file changed then only those few bytes are sent to the remote server instead of the entire file each time it is changed. This byte-level differential backup feature can be applied per customer or per backup data set as desired. Other new features include support for the backing up of Windows system state information (registry, user settings, etc.); support for the backing up of the Active Directory DB and transaction log data; and support for a local copy of backed up data (in addition to the remotely stored data) that can be used as the first choice when restoring data.

The platform is sold by the maximum number of active clients required; the vendor notes that a single client could conceivably be used to backup data on multiple disks via shared drive assigments. Current pricing begins at $599 for 5 clients; which does not include a maintenance contract.
