(NC)-Thinking of redecorating? Want to update the look of your home? Before going to the expense and effort of picking out expensive new paint, wallpaper or furnishings, why not try some new light bulbs? Designing with light is an easy and affordable way to change the mood, look and functionality of any room in your home.
To help you become more lighting design savvy, Sheryl Keller, manager of strategic marketing for Philips Lighting recommends the following tips:
• Lighting can help a small room feel more open or a larger room more inviting. Generally, brighter white light can make a room feel larger, and softer white light will make it feel more warm and intimate.
• Show off unique architectural features such as built-in shelving, mouldings or archways with angled track lighting.
• Use focused spot lighting to highlight the best feature of a room like a fireplace, painting or even a smaller decorative item such as a glass vase. Bright white halogen lighting can give you that punch of light on such items.
• Change the mood and overall "feeling" of a room with a splash of coloured lighting or by using different white tones. There are a variety of compact fluorescent and LED bulbs in a range of colour options such as the new Philips LED 4 Watt GU10 spot light in warm or cool white.
Keep in mind that you may require more than one type of lighting solution in a room. Lighting "layers" can make the light in a room both decorative and functional. First, consider the general illumination required in a room such as overhead pot lighting. Next, factor in your requirements for task lighting such as a reading lamp, and finally add your accent or decorative lighting to show off those special features in a room.
It has never been easier to redecorate with a small investment in lighting that can bring a big return in your home décor.
