(NC)—Experts agree that maintaining a healthy weight is a key strategy for protecting heart health, along with control of blood pressure and cholesterol levels. It is possible to reduce cholesterol by losing excess weight. However, recent research has shown that a proprietary blend of natural polysaccharides – soluble plant fibres– may improve cholesterol MORE than weight loss alone.

A study published in the online Nutrition Journal, involved PGX, short for PolyGlycoPlex, a Canadian supplement developed through decades of research. The study results showed that, in addition to its effects on appetite and weight loss, PGX reduced overall cholesterol and levels of LDL cholesterol (the so-called "bad" cholesterol); an interesting positive "side effect."

Dr. Michael Lyon of the Canadian Center for Functional Medicine explains that, in the 21 day study, total blood cholesterol levels of participants dropped by 14% among those using PGX – compared to only 8.3% with the placebo group. The study also showed a 17% reduction in levels of LDL cholesterol in the PGX group.

Dr. Lyon has conducted multiple studies on PGX. Although the supplement is best known for its effectiveness at reducing appetite and cravings, to assist with sustainable weight control, positive cholesterol-related "side effects" have been noted by participants in other PGX trials as well (information at www.pgx.com).

Ross Friesen, who was involved in a weight loss study in BC explained, “One of the biggest benefits I found was what it did to my cholesterol. My doctor checked my cholesterol levels before I took PGX and a few months later I had blood work done again. There were phenomenal changes. My doctor had never seen such drastic positive drop in cholesterol. And although I had lost weight, he told me weight loss alone wouldn't make that much difference.”

This new research, as well as anecdotal evidence, indicates that PGX may provide hope for those who need to lose weight to support a healthier heart. With weight management, exercise and proper nutrition most people can reduce cholesterol levels and protect their health.
