Lipstick stains are among the trickiest to be removed, typically because of the deep dyes involved in the production of the cosmetic, but there are a few tips and tricks you can use to nix that nasty stain.

  1. Try to catch the stain as soon as you can, because the longer it sits on the fabric, the harder it gets to remove the dyes.

  2. If a fabric is marked as dry clean only, it is best to take it to your dry cleaner for removal without pre treating the stain at all.

  3. It may be useful to pre treat a stain in a laundry pre-soak with spot stain remover.

  4. Wet a towel with denatured alcohol, and lightly touch the stained area with the towel, saturating the lipstick stain. Do not rub the lipstick stain, as that action could grind the stain into the fabric.

  5. After alcohol, gently rub a small amount of liquid laundry detergent into the stain with a circular motion and allow that to set for ten minutes.

  6. If the lipstick stain you are removing is being stubborn and is still showing on the fabric, you may want to try a stain removal stick or spray.

  7. Some stains are going to be tougher than others, mainly if they have been allowed to set, and this step is also useful for anyone who doesn't have access to a stain removal stick or spray, it's possible to use bleach on the stain. For a lipstick stain in particular, it may be best to apply the bleach (color bleach for colored fabrics, black bleach for dark fabrics and normal bleach for white fabrics) directly to the lipstick stain with a soft bristled toothbrush. Again, you will want to dip the brush and swish in circular motions until the stain has disappeared entirely.

  8. Another product to use on the stain may be a diaper sanitizer containing the ingredient sodium percarbonate which is safe for all fabrics, color or white, bright or dark.

  9. Household ammonia mat be used in place of the denatured alcohol (wood alcohol) described in lipstick stain removal tip number three.

  10. After applying any or all of these treatments, wash the garment the way you normally would, and allow it to air dry. The air drying will prevent any leftover lipstick stain particles from being baked into the fabric, and give a dry cleaner a fighting chance to help if your own removal process hasn't done the job.
