2. What Is Hip Roof Framing?

When you use hip roof framing, your roof will come to a central point, with all sides of the roof angled toward this point. This tends to work well for square houses, but if your house is another shape, each side of the roof may have a slightly different angle. You will want to calculate what angle will be required to reach from the outside walls of your house to the center of the roof.

One thing to keep in mind if you decide to use hip roof framing is how steep the rafters will have to be to reach the central point. Hip roof framing may not be a good idea if the rise for the rafters is too steep or too flat. Too steep would make it difficult to cover the rafters. Depending on where you live, you will not want a very flat rise for your rafters because the snow would not slide off the roof after a very big snowstorm. In this case, you would need to climb onto the roof to shovel off the snow to prevent any possibility of your roof caving in.

3. What Is Gable Roof Framing?

Many houses use gable roof framing. This type of roof framing is where the roof is angled on two sides, with the “ends” straight. Gable roof framing is more popular than hip roof framing, because it tends to be easier to calculate the rise for the rafters. Since you only have two sides to calculate, you do not need to determine the central point like you do with hip roof framing. Calculating the rise can still be complicated because you need to determine how steep you want the rise. There are tricks to calculate the rise, and there are tools to make it easier to make sure that you have the correct angle for your rafters.

Gable roof framing is the most common type of roof framing used on older homes. However, this roof framing method is still used for some other types of buildings. Since gable roof framing is so easy to use, it may be used for a storage shed or other type of small building. Since you want to consider all factors, you will want to make sure that you set the rise to be steep enough without making it so steep that you have trouble covering the rafters. The carpenter will need to make sure he correctly calculates the required rise, and use a square to ensure that all angles are correct to achieve this rise.

4. Why Doesn’t Modern Construction Use Gable Roof Framing?

You may wonder if gable roof framing is so great, why do builders use other types of roof framing. Gable roof framing is easy to calculate. However, most builders tend to use truss roofing now. Truss roofing has many benefits that gable roof framing will never be able to compete with.

Truss roofing involves having many trusses attached to the rafters instead of simply supporting the rafters at each end. This allows the roof to bear more weight, since the weight is distributed between the different trusses. In some cases, the truss roof is supported by other trusses or by walls that are designed to be load bearing walls. This is why you want to make sure that you are not cutting into a load bearing wall when you are making alterations to the inside of your home.

Trusses also do not require the calculations that are needed with either gable roof framing or hip roof framing. This means that you do not need to know what pitch you need for your roof before you start with the trusses. With larger buildings, a gable roof would be too cumbersome. Trusses may be used for smaller buildings because trusses use less material than gable roof framing. You will want to evaluate all factors to decide if you want to use truss roof framing instead of other types of roof framing.
