What is Better Than Salmon Fish Oil?

Author: Michael Holman

Experts recommend salmon fish oil for a number of health benefits. Not only does it prevent heart disease, it is also effective in cancer prevention and in boosting the performance of our brain. But did you know there is an even better option out there then salmon fish oil?

Before we talk about the alternative, let’s take a deeper look at what makes salmon oil so good. The primary reason for this is: the presence of Omega 3 fats in the oil. These are essential oils that the body cannot produce inside, and we need to source them from the food we eat. Specifically the DHA and EPA fats are what provide all the great health benefits associated with the oil.

So what’s wrong with salmon oil? There are two main problems that we need to consider:
1) Most of the salmon used for the oil is farm raised. They are bred on pellets which do not contain as much DHA and EPA as that a fish bred in a natural habitat would. The wild ocean fish feed on plankton which contain high concentration of Omega 3 fats.
2) Secondly, very few areas of the ocean are now untouched by industries and the pollution that they cause. Fish bred in such polluted waters contain a lot of contaminants like lead, mercury and PCBs. On top of this, many fish oil companies do not even properly refine their oil to remove these impurities.

A better alternative
There is a relatively unknown fish – Hoki, which is found in the southern waters of the New Zealand coast. This fish is naturally rich in DHA and EPA, as it is caught from the ocean and is not bred artificially. Its oil has been found to contain a higher concentration of omega 3 than salmon fish oil.

Also, the part of the ocean where they are caught from is a government regulated area. Not only is it free from industrial pollution, but the fishing is also regulated. This makes sure there is no environmental impact of the fishing and the ecological balance is maintained. It also translates into a cleaner fish and pure fish oil.

Now, fish can contain natural contaminants too. Molecular distillation removes all types of natural and industrial impurities from the oil. This is a somewhat complex and expensive process, and not all companies use it for refining their oil. Make sure your oil has been molecularly refined, though.

So what’s your choice? If you can get all the health benefits of salmon fish oil by a better alternative, isn’t it worth opting for?
