The Secure SafeWord platform from Secure Computing Corporation provides for the Enterprise a token-based two-factor authentication scheme (based on the generation of one-time-passwords) for access to their Windows-based networks or applications. The new release of the software is targeted for use with the latest Windows 32 and 64-bit operating systems, including Windows XP/2003/Vista/2008 Server.

When using Secure SafeWord, a user carries a token from which they can retrieve a one-time-password (event or time-synch based) that they can then use to login to their systems. Two basic types of authenticators are offered with the platform: The Alpine authenticators, which include a single button that the user would push to retrieve their OTP; and the Gold 3000 tokens, which include a numeric touchpad enabling the user to first keyin their PIN before being allowed to generate a passcode. In each case, the vendor states that the one-time-passwords generated can never be re-used.

An additional token option is the vendor's MobilePass, software that can be loaded onto a mobile phone (BlackBerry, Palm, Windows Mobile, and J2ME-enabled devices) or a Windows desktop, enabling generation of the one-time-passcode through the mobile device itself. MobilePass is available separately or as part of the Enterprise Solution Pack.

Applications that can be enabled for Secure SafeWord access include VPNs (the support list includes Cisco, Checkpoint, Nortel, Citrix, Juniper and the vendor's own Secure Computing SecureWire), Citrix (no client software is necessary), Outlook Web Access, General Web applications (via an included SafeWord Web Agent), RADIUS-supported devices, and custom applications via a provided SDK. Additionally, the new Enterprise Solution Pack includes components enabling the protection of user desktop logins to Windows domain resources, Windows Terminal Services, and Windows Remote Desktop.

Management of the platform is via integration with MMC/Active Directory or through the vendor's Management Console (included in the Enterprise Solution Pack).

Also available in the Enterprise Solution Pack is the vendor's new SecureWire offering, which provides an SSL VPN gateway enabling browser-based (and Secure SafeWord protected) access to the corporate network or applications (full VPN connectivity or Web portal access).

Secure SafeWord is available now, pricing is approximately $99 per user per year with volume discounts available. The Enterprise Solution Pack is priced at $4,995 for unlimited users.
