You probably have sensitive skin if you have thin or fine skin. Most likely you sunburn easily and your skin freaks out if a product is too harsh. While most products are unacceptable for your skin, there is a way to care for it.

  1. It is a good idea to visit a dermatologist. Dermatologists are skin specialists and can determine just how sensitive your skin is. Another option is to have an allergy test done to figure out what makes your skin go crazy. If visiting specialists is not an option for you, an easy way to see if a product is good for your skin is to apply a sample of every new product you buy--make-up, moisturizer, sun block, or cleanser--on one small patch of your face such as along the jawline. While you may think that testing some skin on the inside of your wrist is adequate, the skin on your arm may not be as sensitive as the skin on your face, so a wrist test is not necessarily an accurate test for a skin reaction.

  2. If you do not have a dermatologist to help you find skin products, choose mild cleansers. Avoid cleansers and toners that contain alcohol or benzoyl peroxide as these tend to be too strong for sensitive skin. Find cleansers and lotions with calming ingredients such as lavender, sandalwood, chamomile, and rose. There are also a lot of great organic, all-natural products out today. Another good way to go in terms of cleansers, lotions, and toners is to make your own. By doing this, you can monitor what goes in it and the ingredient list will be pronounceable for once!

Wash twice a day, once in the morning and once at night, with either a soft washcloth or your hands. Since your skin is so sensitive, it is best to tone only once per day. It does not matter whether you tone day or night, though I personally like to tone at night and follow toning with moisturizer. Your skin cannot tell whether it is morning or night. If toning once a day is drying out your skin, skip toning altogether. Everyone's skin is different. Avoid exfoliators as well, and limit exfoliating to once a week or every other week.
