Have you ever been shopping online, found the perfect product that you desperately want, and then click to the shipping page and find out that the shipping is twice or three times as much as the product? If you have large items that will need extensive shipping, or even need to be picked up locally, that will restrict your business prospects online. There are certain areas of business that sell specialty items that cost enough that the large shipping price is expected, but unless you belong in this category, stay away from the over priced shipping cost.

Many online marketers want to hike up the shipping cost in an attempt to make the profit there. They may sell an item for only pennies, but when the consumer goes to the shipping page they see that the shipping will rob them blind. You have worked so hard to get visitors to go to the buyer page, to have them hit the back button because of absurd shipping prices would be a shame. Make your site user friendly, and leave the surprises, such as big shipping prices out of the deal. You want to build your customers confidence in you, keep reasonable prices, and watch the trust grow.

Remember to price your product appropriately, and make sure it is not too big and bulky to ship. Another option is to give incentives like free shipping when they spend a certain amount, or coupons to use at their next visit. Keep you shipping cost set to reflect actual shipping costs, do not up the price just to make a few extra dollars. Make your profit from the item being sold, the consumer will consider that a fair exchange and will feel treated honestly.

Build your business on honesty with your customers and you will see that your foundation of your business will be loyal regular customers. What may see as a momentary profit at the time by making money through the shipping will only hurt your business in the end. Customers will not buy from businesses that they perceive to be ripping them off.
