Utilities - Energy Monitors For The Future?

Author: David Collins

With energy prices fluctuating during this tough economic time, many householders are becoming more energy conscious, using a variety of energy saving devices in a bid to cut their monthly utility bills.

Now the government has outlined plans to introduce ‘smart meters’ into homes in the UK by the end of 2020. These devices could allow homeowners to keep track of their monthly spending by letting them know how much they are spending on utilities.

These devices will be used to show how much you are spending each month, as well as showing graphs and charts so you can track your energy usage over a period of time. By showing how much gas and electricity you are using through graphical interfaces, it is hoped that such devices will help us to save money on our utility bills by making us more aware of how much we are spending.

The meters themselves could help eliminate the need for meter readings, with statistics being sent directly to energy providers, but could such devices actually make us more aware of the cost of our utilities? These smart meters could eventually eliminate the need for estimated bills, as homeowners would be able to keep track of their spending, with details on usage being sent via wireless technology each day.

Should you want to switch your provider in future, the units could be configured to your new provider, which means that you wouldn’t have to have a new monitor fitted for a different provider.

The use of these energy monitors may very well save us money; however the cost of installation to consumers and the energy companies are still being investigated. If test schemes prove successful, soon it could be a lot easier to keep an eye on our outgoings on utilities, allowing us to save money and make our monthly budgets go further.
