Sorenson Media keeps Squeeze essentially the same tool online professionals have long depended on with the release of Squeeze 5, but have added ease and performance improvements that promise to make using it even smoother.
We spoke to Randon Morford, director of product development at Sorenson Media, and he told us that improvements to Squeeze fall into four categories: workflow enhancements, improved video quality, improved audio quality, and faster results.
What's New in Squeeze 5 * Workflow Improvements
Encoding options are now grouped together under the heading "Audience Presets," on the left side of the interface, with formats organized by how your viewers will see the video. You can easily optimize your video for the iPod or PlayStation Portable, for example, by choosing those encoding options.
Other workflow improvements include the ability to copy encoding settings between folders, add automatic FTP uploading to a folder's settings, and easily search for the settings or bitrates that you need.
* Improved Video Quality
Squeeze 5's new output options include Blu-Ray support (using the VC-1 encoder), as well as improved MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and H.264 encoders, especially when using HD settings. You'll also find faster pre-processing, improved filters, and deinterlacing with blend and adaptive blend controls. New pre-processing options let you add a watermark, sharpen your video, and change hue saturation.
* Improved Audio Quality
Audio processing improvements include AC-3- compatible 5.1 to 7.1 surround sound and support for many VST audio plug-ins.
A major enhancement for high quality audio is the inclusion of BIAS Soundsoap, valued at $129, fully integrated in both Squeeze Pro versions. Soundsoap lets users remove noise and crackles to create clean, crisp audio.
* Improved Speed
Built-in multithreading lets Squeeze handle many encoding options simultaneously on multi-core machines. Users can compress and encode up to 1.5 files on each core, so a quad-core processor, for example, can process six files at one time.
"This is one of our biggest improvements to Squeeze, and the reason for that is because of our customers," said Morford. "We get great feedback from our customers. They talk to us and we listen. We've made a lot of improvements in our workflows, quality, and speed, and that's because our customers told us what they needed."
The Squeeze 5 family includes Sorenson Squeeze 5 ($499), Sorenson Squeeze 5 Pro ($599 for Windows, $779 for Mac), Sorenson Squeeze 5 for Flash ($199), and Sorenson Squeeze 5 for Flash Pro ($299). Upgrades being at $99, and software is available for download or on shipped CDs. For more information, visit www.sorensonmedia.com
