Press Release | 4/3/2008 | Motorsports

Goodyear internship will expose minority students to a wide array of opportunities through NASCAR.

Dallas/Fort Worth, TX - April 2, 2008 - The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, the exclusive tire supplier of NASCAR's three largest series, has awarded two local students race weekend internships at Texas Motor Speedway April 5th and 6th. Gilbert Guatemala, a senior at Eastern Hills High School, and Ashli Moore, a senior at O.D. Wyatt High School, will work two days in their fields of interest as part of the Goodyear Racing and Diversity Program, an initiative the company started to provide minority High School students with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the many career paths associated with NASCAR. The two students were selected to participate in the race weekend from a pool of eligible students chosen with help from Junior Achievement of the Chisholm Trail and the Fort Worth Independent School District.

"Goodyear is proud to offer Gilbert and Ashli the unique opportunity to experience first-hand the wide variety of career opportunities available through the sport of NASCAR," said Kris Kienzl, NASCAR Marketing Manager at Goodyear. "Thanks to our longstanding, uninterrupted involvement with NASCAR, we are able to provide an inside look at a variety of career paths that interest them, with mentors from all over the sport, whether from NASCAR, individual race teams, tracks or Goodyear."

In its first year, the Goodyear Racing and Diversity program has already provided more than 60 high school students from across the country the chance to experience NASCAR first-hand and receive a behind-the-scenes look at a NASCAR race.

Students that participate in these events must maintain a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA and be in good standing in their school and local community to become eligible to apply for race-weekend internships.

Once selected, students are paired with several ‘mentors' in career areas of interest to them for two, six-hour days of work. Students who complete their race-weekend internships are eligible to apply for one of six scholarships, including five $2,000 awards and one $30,000 scholarship to be used towards their continuing education. The program, offered annually in six areas including Dallas, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Daytona Beach, Detroit and Dover (DE), provides interested minority students with a graduated program of at-track experiences, internships and ultimately, the opportunity to receive one of six scholarships to help continue their education.

Both Gilbert and Ashli attended the NASCAR Busch Series race at Texas Motor Speedway last November with a group of other area students, where they received a behind-the-scenes tour of the pits, Goodyear Racing's tire operations and watched the race from the stands. All students who attended the race weekend were eligible to submit applications for the two race-day internships.

"Gilbert and Ashli were selected based on the strength of their school records and extra-curricular activities and the recommendations of their teachers. Each student will be paired with established professionals whose careers match the students' areas of interest," added Kienzl.

During Gilbert's four years at Eastern Hills High School he has excelled as a leader in and out of the classroom. In addition to his strong academics, Gilbert is also an integral member of the Future Business Leaders of America and LINK Crew, which helps underclassmen adjust to high school life. During his weekend internship, Gilbert will experience where his interests in engineering, public relations and hospitality could take him.

Ashli's commitment to academic and extracurricular excellence is among her major accomplishments as a student. Ashli showcases her leadership qualities by being a member of SKILLS USA and the National Honor Society. During the weekend, Ashli will experience how engineering, licensing and marketing impacts what happens at the track.

Over the last 50 years, Goodyear has worked to bring innovation to its racing products, which, in turn, has helped foster heightened competition on the track. Since it first began supplying tires to NASCAR, Goodyear tires have logged 1,449 Sprint Cup Series victories, and the number continues to rise. Goodyear consumer tires are inspired by the innovations and cutting-edge technology from the race track.

The Finest in European Automotive in Bend.
The moment one walks through the doors at German Master Tech in Bend, Oregon, its meticulously kept, white floored shop currently home to an impressive lineup of detail and restoration in progress: the bright silver Porsche spec racer being built in the center of the room, the Porsche 911 S undergoing a full restoration and the variant of others, from BMWs to Ferraris, it is quickly understood why German Master Tech, with some of the finest European auto technicians and restoration specialists in the country, supports some of the finest European cars on the West Coast. This German-apprenticed, master-trained company, that refers to its work as “a craft”, is known to many by the unmatched service and support they provide their racing and restoration clients across the country, to others by the niche expedition preparation service they provide all-terrain vehicles, and still to their most dedicated customer, the fine European car enthusiast, German Master Tech is truly the one to many in this town.
German Master Tech’s President, a BMW Master Technician, Tim Morris, brings with him over 25 years experience in the industry and has been awarded several achievement and master technician status awards though BMW specialized factory schools. Tim has also achieved BMW’s Center of Excellence Award twice and is a seven-time BMW President’s Club Technician. German Master Tech’s co-founder and past partner, Jay Audia, won the 07 SCCA Regional Championships for GT2 in his German Master Tech-prepared Panoz. The company’s third founder is one of Bend’s most passionate Porsche enthusiasts, John Audette.

“Restorations have been a large part of our focus,” said Morris, describing some of his company’s award winning roots. “From our very first restoration, a 58’ BMW Isetta 300, which we took to the Forest Grove Concours d’ Elegance in 05 and won our class, in addition to taking home the President’s Award, which was judged by Pacific College’s President as “the car the college student would most want to drive,” said Morris. “I drew on my past car show and restoration experience to pull off a surprise win. It was a good deal of timing and the right car, with the right colors. We stole the show with a micro car, it was great!” Morris said standing next to his red Porsche hot rod parked inside his shop. “Car shows and racing are my passions,” he said with a smile.
“Our tuning business is the best around,” continued Morris of the company’s capabilities. “The application of our developed performance packages to already great cars really creates a ‘wow’.” German Master Tech provides full warranty BMW performance upgrades as a Dinan-authorized dealer, and Porsche performance programs that take the 911 to the next level. “Our tuning business has led us to organized racing, which has been a life-long dream of mine.” Included in German Master Tech’s list of champion racing cars are a 64’ BMW 1800 TISA owned by Steve Walker of Salem. The 1800 TISA is BMW’s first post-war racer based on a production car in regional vintage racing. A 911 Porsche racer owned by Bend’s Mark Powell will be racing in one of the West Coast’s fastest growing amateur racing classes, Spec 911. “Mark’s car is special as it ties together the whole business: a restoration with an extreme tuning package.”

“German Master Tech has worked on all my cars, including a Range Rover, BMW, three Ferraris and a Porsche,” said Ervin Richards, a long-time German Master Tech customer. “I bring my cars here because they consistently do it better and because they’ve always gone way beyond the call of duty in their service and support of my vehicles.” “If I can bring it to German Master Tech,” said Richards, “I will.”
