Successful Home Improvement Projects Require Good Planning

All successful endeavors begin with a good plan. "If you fail to plan, you fail to succeed."

It is no different when you are planning a home improvement project. You must plan ahead in order for your project to turn out well.

Let's say for example you are designing a deck for your back porch. You need to go out and decide where your deck will begin and where it will end. How are you going to use your deck? Will your deck have a railing on it or not? Steps?

Do you plan on putting a table and chairs on it, or just a couple of chairs? If you never plan on putting a table on your deck, or if you think you might at some point, this is important in your planning process. You need to make sure that your deck is deep enough to accompany the accessories you want to add to it.

Once you have determined your width and depth, you need to look at how how from the ground your deck will rest.

Don't forget any access points that you may have leading under your home for service repairs. You will really hate yourself if you build your deck and block access to those service points.

If you plan on adding a hot tub to your deck, keep in mind the additional structural requirements for the extra weight that your hot tub will bring to your deck. Most hot tubs weigh in the range of 700 pounds, and when filled with water and people, you will be looking at a total of around 4000 extra pounds that your deck will need to support.

Now that you have a measuring idea of the size of your porch, you can make an accurate assessment of how much wood you will need to complete your project.

Once you know your wood requirements and other supply requirements, then you can make an accurate assessment of your supply costs.

Always figure your project costs 10% upwards to account for any miscalcuations you may have made.

When you have made good plans, you will know what you should expect, and you should not meet any major surprises along the way.

Good planning will allow you to undertake any home improvement projects with great success.

Good Luck in all of your home improvement projects.
