Even in the face of monumental gas hikes, summer road trips have never been more popular. Driving gives an intimate and relaxed glimpse at the scenic countryside, offering views simply unattainable via air travel. Nevertheless, after ten games of would-you-rather and an hour of name-that-license-plate, even the most thrilling road trips can grow long and tedious. Try the following tips to make your next car trip enjoyable the entire way.
1. Bring Music (A Lot). Pack your car with a variety of music, including tunes you can sing along with and others that offer an upbeat break to highway hypnosis. Create a custom trip mix on your iPod or burn a CD, getting in the mood with songs like Willie Nelson's "On the Road Again".
2. Work WiFi. Need to connect with work from time-to-time? Highways are now dotted with WiFi connections, so you can check email and stay connected to everyone via wireless over lunch. To find free hotspots along your route, search 'free wi-fi hotspots' online.
3. Say Cheese. Keep your camera close at hand and shoot pictures of interesting buildings, people and local attractions. Use your drive to practice and hone your photography skills (but always pull over before shooting).
4. Plan for Stops. Plan breaks along the way at local tourist traps. If you pass something quirky or interesting, check it out. Plus, don't forget the souvenirs along the way.
5. Listen to a Novel. Most libraries and book stores offer a tremendous selection of books on tape or CD - from Harry Potter to Pulitzer winners, romance and mystery novels. These books can span greater than six hours and are a perfect way to engage the entire family.
So get out on the open road. With the right packing, planning and preparation, you'll be there in no time.
