The health care crisis in the United States has been the subject of countless articles, television stories and even a recent movie -- Michael Moore’s “Sicko.” Many have proposed abandoning a free market and adopting a socialist approach, or emulating systems such as those in Canada, England or even Cuba.

One solution, which is truly American, involves citizens taking action to correct the problem. Advocacy is defined as “active support of an idea or cause.” Individuals advocating for better health can only improve an overly stressed system.

An example of health advocacy in action has been the responses to this weekly Healthy Living column. Based on these comments and inquiries, it is obvious some Americans are taking an active role in their own health care.

Important steps to becoming a health advocate include:

1. Take control of your health. Stop smoking, eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly. Follow your physician’s instructions regarding medications and other treatments.

2. Keep a list. Compose a list of all your medications, your physician’s name and phone number, and any implanted devices such as a pacemaker or defibrillator. This list should be kept with you at all times in case of emergency.

3. Maintain a file of recent test results. Often physicians do not have access to all lab tests, X-rays and EKGs performed. Bringing these results to an appointment can avoid expensive duplication of tests.

4. Keep informed. Reading articles such as those in Healthy Living and Backus Hospital’s Healthy Connections, listening to health podcasts and searching the Internet can direct you to appropriate care. Don’t hesitate to contact authors by accessing the e-mail addresses listed at the end of publications.

5. Make doctor visits more productive. Bring no more than five thoughtful questions to your appointment. Write them down beforehand and have them ready for discussion.

6. Don’t be afraid to travel. Your physician may refer you to a specialist in another city. It is well worth the time and effort to obtain certain specialized care.

Be proactive about your health. Informed patients are often more satisfied about their health care because of increased understanding and awareness.

Small steps can alleviate some burdens to the American health care system. An elusive solution may be within our grasp.
