At the heart of the Rebel Xsi is the 12.2 megapixel sensor and the Digic III processor that has already proved its ability in previous Eos 1 models. Pushing past its competition with the 12.2 megapixels, the Rebel Xsi offers a variety advancements that make this camera joy to use.
The great thing about the Canon EOS Rebel XTi is that it provides all the features and performance that you'd expect from a professional digital DSLR but at prices that are good for entry-level photography enthusiasts.
Although Canon defined the entry-level market several years ago with the Eos 300D, the company has lost some ground over time with strong models from arch rival Nikon, and more recently Sony and Olympus.
Canon's previous update to the Eos 1D Mk II, the Mk IIn, resulted in arguably the maker's finest pro-level DSLR to date, so the arrival of the Eos 1D Mk III has been eagerly anticipated.
Canon EOS 20DCanon has a pretty good idea of how to make a camera. They have been doing it for quite sometime with much success. The EOS 20D replaces the EOS 10D, adding higher resolution, a broader range of ISO settings and faster performance.
Canon's 8 megapixel EOS 20D has been replaced by the new 30D, but some will be disappointed to learn the new model adopts the same 8.2 CMOS sensor originally designed for its predecessor.
Canon's EOS 400D is the successor to the hugely popular EOS 350D digital SLR, featuring 10.1 megapixel resolution, anti-dust features and a bigger, 2.5in, screen.
Outdoing its semi-pro 10-megapixel Eos 40D as well as the Eos 400D, Canon's new mid-range Eos 450D features a higher resolution 12.2-megapixel Cmos sensor with automated dust removal, 14-bit colour capture, and a new, larger 3in LCD with Live View. Also tempting, and tallying with our results with up to four stops compensation, is the newly developed EF-S 18-55mm image stabilised kit lens.
Canon's EOS 5D is a 12.8 megapixel digital SLR with a full-frame sensor. This covers the same area as standard 35mm film, allowing lenses to deliver the same field of view they would if mounted on a 35mm film camera. By contrast, most digital SLRs have physically smaller sensors that result in the focal length of lenses effectively being multiplied by 1.5x or 1.6x. This means the EOS-5D is excellent news for fans of wide-angle photography.

The HF10 also impressed us with its design. Canon's advertising stresses its usability, and we can't argue. It may not be the smallest camcorder on the market - try the Sony, left, if that's what you're after - but it fits perfectly in the palm. All the most important buttons fall naturally under your fingers, and the menu is a doddle.
However, the HV20 does miss having a lens ring, with a small roller wheel taking care of manual focusing. There's also a separate button for backlight compensation. The remaining functions are accessible using the joystick next to the Start/Stop button.
Once you get over the fact that Canon's new combined HDV and MiniDV camcorder differs little from last year's HV20 in anything but the sleek black body colour, you'll soon appreciate what this fully featured high definition camcorder has to offer.
The Ixus 900Ti is the new top-of-the-range model in Canon's Ixus line-up. The real headline grabber is that the Ixus 900Ti has a huge 10-megapixel CCD, which means it can take higher resolution photos than many Digital SLRs.

Canon's range of Pixma inkjet printers have made a good name for themselves over the years. Most are desktop machines, but the iP100 is a portable printer, designed to be carried around with you. It weighs just 2kg - a bit more if you attach the lithium-ion battery.
Even more of a throwback than the iP1200's looks was its use of three inks. Almost all inkjets these days use four inks, which they mix to create millions of different shades and colours. Really good photo printers use six or even eight inks. We haven't seen a three-ink A4 printer for years and years - and frankly, we'd hoped never to see one again.
With inkjets these days requiring umpteen expensive cartridges to print - when they're not busy scanning, copying and making the tea - it's reassuring to find there are still models that just do the job, and cheaply.
This compact Canon inkjet printer is easy to use and prints good photos, but it's not cheap.Canon's PIXMA mini260 is a compact printer that can print photographs up to 6 x 4in in size. It's about the size of a sandwich toaster and has a pull-out handle that makes it easy to carry around.
But it's the MP510's photo printing that proved the biggest draw, with a lot of detail and accurately reproduced colours at incredible speeds. It whipped out our six 6x4-inch test photos at best quality in just seven minutes and 41 seconds, which works out at around a minute and a quarter each; this is not far off the speed of the best dedicated photo inkjets.
Digital camera manufacturers have always loved megapixel ratings, which often become the headline figure on the packaging, enticing you to opt for the highest you can afford.

A second advance over the already superb SD700IS is the availability of a 1600 ISO setting for those low light settings.
Even though it looks like it belongs in the sleek and slim category, the Canon Powershot Sd870 IS packs all the features and functionality that you would expect from a standard digital camera. The picture quality is great, with several features for improving your point-and-shoot photos.
The Canon Powershot Tx1 may be more of a digital camera than a camcorder, but indeed, this hybrid camera has some outstanding features including small size and HD recording. Standout features for the Canon Powershot Tx1 include a 7.1 megapixel sensor, 10x optical zoom with 4x digital zoom and optical image stabilization.
The CP740 is certainly compact, but you'll need some room on your desk, as the paper tray stretches six inches in front. There are several input options. You can print from your PC via USB; insert a Memory Stick, Compact Flash or SD card into the front of the printer; or plug your PictBridge or Direct Print-compatible camera into the printer's USB port.
Canon first introduced the sit-up-and- beg Selphy ES1 printer just over a year ago and it has enjoyed sufficient success for the company to follow it up with a cheaper, improved model. Coming in at more than £50 cheaper than the ES1, the ES20 follows the lines of the earlier machine in ice-white plastic and has a smoothly curved top, offering its 76mm LCD display at a convenient angle for viewing. There's a spring-loaded carrying handle too.

The Casio Exilim EX-Z1000 is a great example of how great things can come in small packages because this slim camera takes quality pictures. This camera is light, compact and easy to carry with a large display screen that makes it easy to see the viewing angle of the camera and the quality of the pictures you take.

The S100FS's best feature is its lens, which starts at a true wide angle 28mm focal length and goes all the way to a 14.3x zoom. To achieve that with a DSLR, you'd need two lenses. The macro mode is just as impressive, focusing on subjects just 1cm away.
The new FinePix S5 Pro is the successor to Fuji's S3 Pro, a model well liked by enthusiasts for its pleasing colour rendition and wider-than-average dynamic range.
It's not a digital SLR, but neither is it a compact. This is one confused camera, that we love and loathe in almost equal measure. Start with the lens: we love it. It equates to 28-300mm lens on a 35mm camera, and for that alone you could pay upwards of £300 on a DSLR.
Fujifilm's FinePix S9500 Zoom has a 9 megapixel resolution and a long, 10.7x optical zoom. It may be an all-in-one camera, but its design and feature set suggests Fujifilm is squarely aiming it at those considering a budget digital SLR. Its sealed body means you can't swap lenses like you can with a digital SLR, but, then, you don't have to worry about dust getting on the sensor.
The Z5fd from Fuji is a 6.3 megapixel compact camera that has minimalist styling, but still manages to pack in a 3x optical zoom lens. The lens is entirely internal, using a clever mixture of mirrors to produce the zoom, which means the body of the camera retains its thin profile whether it's on or off. The lens covers a 35mm equivalent of 36mm to 108mm - not an inconsiderable amount when you consider the tiny dimensions of the Fuji.

Of the three cameras that make up Nikon's latest consumer digital camera line-up - the Coolpix L2, L3 and L4 - this, rather confusingly, is the top-of-the-range model.
The Nikon Coolpix P5100 is one of those digital cameras that help bridge the divide between photography enthusiasts and occasional point-and-shoot shutterbugs. This camera is simple enough for the average user while still providing features that veteran photographers will appreciate.
The Coolpix S10 uses an unusual split-body design, allowing you to rotate the section with the lens separately from the main body. As it swings through 270 degrees, it's ideal for taking shots above your head, or very close to the ground, since you can still see exactly where the lens is pointing.
At first glance, the Nikon S5 is unassuming. The near-featureless fascia and tiny recessed lens give it a distinctly minimalist appearance. It's anything but modest once you start using it, though - excellent image quality, loads of features and ease of use make this a great point-and-click camera.
Nikon's latest digital SLR offfering is the long-awaited successor to the D100, launched three and a half years ago. Targeted at serious amateurs and professional photographers, the D200 significantly improves on its predecessor in every respect, sporting higher resolution, better features, faster handling and superior build quality. Indeed, in many respects, the D200 comes very close to the top-of-the-range D2X, which costs almost three times as much.
The D2Xs is Nikon's new and updated flagship digital SLR. This professional workhorse includes new features, plus some tweaks over the D2x, which it replaces. The D2Xs retains its predecessor's excellent body, with functional ergonomics, but the rear 2.5in LCD can now be judged across a 170-degree viewing angle in both horizontal and vertical directions.
The D3 is the successor to the pro-level D2Xs and is the first DSLR from Nikon to feature a full-frame Cmos sensor, bursts up to 9 frames per second and sensor sensitivity running to a genuine ISO6400. The D3 improves on its predecessor with a new 51-point AF system, larger 3in VGA resolution colour monitor with auto-focus during Live View, and a 14-bit A/D conversion option in addition to the usual 12bit capture.
The Nikon D40 is positioned to be an entry level camera for those who are making the transition from a point and shoot or from a film SLR camera.
Aimed at those who might be tempted by a high-end compact, Nikon's D40 is the company's latest entry-level digital SLR and is the successor to the popular D50. While rivals chase ever-higher sensor resolutions, though, Nikon's newest and most affordable digital SLR packs a similar 6 megapixel sensor and processor to its predecessor.
Nikon knows a thing or two about making cameras, having been in the business since 1948. Its entry-level digital SLRs are something special, the D50 and D40 having already won Computer Buyer Best Buys.
As far as appearances are concerned, the new Nikon D40x looks very similiar to the five-month-old 6 megapixel D40, apart from the badge to the right of the lens throat. It's also bundled with the same excellent kit lens, the Nikon-made AF-S DX 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II zoom. So how does the D40x hope to pry you away from its rivals?
If taking pictures is part of your business, but a simple point-and-shoot doesn't give you the flexibility or quality you need, take a look at Nikon's digital single-lens reflex camera.
The 10-megapixel D60 is Nikon's newest addition to its consumer DSLRs and replaces the D40x. Although it shares a 10.2-megapixel resolution CCD and has a similar body design to its predecessor, the new model brings with it several major improvements, as well as a host of subtle enhancements. The main ones include a sophisticated automated sensor cleaning system, faster continuous shooting, an Active D-Lighting option found on the pro-level D3 and the addition of optical image stabilisation in the form a new 18-55mm VR (IS) kit lens.
If the new D60 looks familiar, there's a simple explanation. Hold the old D40X model in one hand and this camera in the other, and aside from the silver model-name badge you'll struggle to tell the difference.
On the camera itself, hardware improvements over the D40x include a two-part cleaning system for removing dust that enters the camera while changing lenses.
You have to hand it to Nikon: having arrived a full five years late to the full-frame DSLR market (Canon got there first with its Eos 1Ds in 2002), it's shown up with style.
Using the same Sony made sensor as the Alpha 100, Nikon's new D80 is the replacement for the ageing D70. Although the 6-megapixel D70 received a welcome update with the D70s, there was no increase in resolution. The D80 addresses this and adds a raft of features derived from the excellent D200 semi-pro model.
The 10-megapixel Olympus E-3 is the long-awaited successor to the 5-megapixel pro-level E-1, the maker's first DSLR based on the FourThirds standard.
The Olympus E-400 is the successor to the company's popular entry-level E-500 digital SLR carrying a 10 megapixel CCD and 2.5in screen in the smallest and lightest body we've seen to date.
In a little over the four months since we reviewed the E-400, Olympus has released the E-410, still carrying a 10-megapixel sensor with the superb SSWF (Supersonic Wave Filter) anti-dust system but boasting several additional features.
The Olympus E-500 8 megapixel digital SLR is essentially a revamp of the entry-level E-300. The new model addresses all the shortcomings of the E-300 in a traditional but trim-looking polycarbonate body and adds several features bringing it into line with, and in some cases exceeding, recent offerings from rival makers.
After its success with the introduction of the tiny E-410 and its handy Live View features, Olympus has expanded its range further with yet another minuscule digital SLR camera aimed at novices and enthusiasts alike.
Like the earlier entry-level Olympus E-420, the mid-range E-510 has undergone a revamp in the form of the E-520. There's no change in the body shape, and viewed from the front, top and sides it's essentially the same plastic case as the E-510's, albeit with some extras.
Olympus Evolt E-510With its easy to use features and top notch performance, the Olympus Evolt E-510 is a great camera that people of all skill levels will enjoy using.
The Mju 700 is very light and its distinctive wedge-shape makes the camera convenient and comfortable to hold.
Olympus' recent revamp to its range of compacts has resulted in a fresh take on the raft of super-slim pocket cameras featuring folded optics. With the tiny lens elements housed within the camera body, the new Mju 720 SW is one of the few shockproof and waterproof cameras that don't require a separate housing.

Two new tapeless high-definition camcorders from Panasonic promise full-specification 1920 x 1080i HD recording and playback and, depending on which model you choose, the ability to read and write to either high-capacity SD card or hybrid SD/DVD media.
Panasonic's second DSLR, the Lumix DMC-L10, is the follow-up to the maker's Lumix DMC-L1, a metal-bodied semi-pro model, which featured one of the best kit lenses around - the image-stabilised Leica 14-50mm f/2.8-3.5 zoom. If the DMC-L1 was targeting photography enthusiasts, the 10-megapixel resolution DMC-L10 can be seen as aimed at the digital compact owner trading up.
Panasonic's Lumix DMC-TZ1 is a 5 megapixel compact camera with a difference: underneath its relatively plain-looking exterior hides a massive 10x optical zoom lens. Until now, if you'd wanted this kind of optical range, you'd need to have carried around a much larger super-zoom camera such as the Fujifilm FinePix S9500 or Panasonic's own DMC-FZ30. By contrast, the TZ1 delivers this reach in a considerably smaller and more convenient body, but the big question is whether the quality of captured images suffers as a consequence.
The NV-GS27 is the entry-level product in Panasonic's 2006 range of MiniDV camcorders. The new single-CCD, DV-out-only model is almost identical in appearance to the next model up in the range, the NV-GS37.
Panasonic's NV-GS300 features sleek body styling and improved features over last year's models - just take the impressive higher-performance Optical Image Stabilisation, for example. The NV-GS300 sits just below the NV-GS500 in the range and, as with its siblings, AV inputs are conspicuous by their absence.

Even if you use your system only for personal use, it probably holds several gigabytes of documents, music, photos and video, all of which could be lost should your hard disk fail or you suffer an attack from a worm or virus.
One day your laptop and desktop PCs are happily sharing files, the next day they won't. We look at several reasons and solutions for this failure to communicate.

Ricoh has a history of making cameras that goes back several decades and its pre-digital GR range of 35mm compacts was critically acclaimed.
We were suitably impressed by Ricoh's recent 8-megapixel GR-D compact camera. Not only did it feature a highly corrected and bright 28mm-equivalent f/2.4 lens, but it was offered with an optional 21mm wide-angle conversion lens as well as a removable optical viewfinder.
Mention the name of Ricoh to anyone and they're more likely to think of fax machines and photocopiers than digital cameras.

It's widely known that you can't judge a camera by its megapixels. Of course, that doesn't stop manufacturers and sales assistants pushing ever higher resolutions, but the truth is that cramming more pixels into a tiny sensor can bring more problems than benefits.
Samsung's 8-megapixel Pro815 is one of the new batch of lower-priced all-in-one cameras aimed at users considering a budget digital SLR. Anyone looking for a high-quality digital compact camera is spoilt for choice these days. One of the more esoteric is Sigma's DP1. Although it has the same APS-C format sensor as the Sigma SD14, it's the small size of the lens that's the real marvel.
The SD14's lens mount takes only Sigma (SA) mount lense, and thanks to the 20.7mm x 13.8mm (roughly APS-C sized) sensor, effectively crops the lens' field of view by 1.7x. Although there are no officially bundled lens options, the smaller sensor makes the popular Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro, for example, become a handy 29-119mm in effect.

The Sony Alpha DSLR-A100 is Sony’s first entry into the DSLR market. They teamed up with Konica Minolta to produce the A100, meaning that the camera inherited Konica’s anti-shake technology. The Alpha A350 continues Sonythat has been dominated by Canon and Nikon. Sony has separated itself from the pack by improving the integration of live view into the camera.’s push to cut into the consumer dSLR market

Sony's pocket-friendly Cyber-shot DSC-T100 is larger than it looks, almost matching the dimensions of Sony's flagship 10-megapixel N2. However, while there's the same-size 3in LCD panel, the new 8 megapixel T100 boasts space-saving folded-optics with a substantially more impressive 5x zoom range. It's the equivalent to a 38-175mm f/3.5-4.4 and is one of the longest telephoto zooms currently available in a pocket camera.
Sony's Cyber-shot N2 is the maker's top-of-the-range compact, replacing the similar-looking N1 with a 10.1 megapixel sensor, flexible Spot AF system and large, 3in touch-sensitive screen.
The T70 may not be the last word in image quality, but the sheer class it exudes in its design, build and operation, along with a price tag that's a long way from outrageous, means it outstrips Canon's latest IXUS models and earns the T70 a place on the A List.
Despite housing a 3x optical zoom and a 6-megapixel CCD, the Sony T9 has the height and width dimensions of a credit card. It's only 20mm deep, too, making it perfect for slipping into a pocket.
The Sony DCR-HC38 MiniDV Handycam camcorder offers everything that you’d expect from Sony and its Handycam namesake. With equal attention given to quality and connectivity, this MiniDV camcorder blazes new trails in multimedia territory.
The camcorder provides Super Steady Shot image stabilisation, but it's not as impressive as Panasonic's recent OIS (Optical Image Stabilisation) and is designed to help out in those occasional dodgy situations where a hand-held zoom has to be used.
Sony’s Handycam DCR SR200 is a reliable choice in the microdrive category, backed by the Sony brand and several appealing features not found in many other flash drive camcorders. Sony Handycam DCR SR200 helps beginners feel proficient with out-of-the-box filming and offers more storage than its competitors.
The Sony HD-SR5 is a Flash Media hard drive camcorder that aims to deliver the highest levels of definition available to hard drive camcorders. The ClearVid CMOS sensor and Enhanced Image Processor work to maximize resolution and sensitivity while lowering noise.
As the top of this Sony series of miniDV camcorders, this is the camcorder to buy from Sony if you want to take still pictures as well as video. The other two mini DV camcorders do not have still photo capability. The Sony Handycam DCR HC48 offers a range of exceptional technical features and Sony’s well known point and shoot appeal for beginning filmmakers and anyone who wants a small, reliable camera for filming under a variety of conditions.
The Sony Handycam Dcr-sr40 is an easy to use, lightweight hard drive digital camcorder with 30 GB of storage that can record about seven hours of video. Video is output in a compressed MPEG2 format. The MPEG2 format results in decent, but not excellent, video quality. However, the bonus to this format is it is highly compatible with most third-party video editing software.
When it comes to filming in high definition, quality is paramount. The same attitude holds true for the design of the Sony Handycam HDR HC7. The Sony Handycam HDR HC7 has all the features and performance that you could want from an HDV camcorder. Granted, all this comes at a higher price than many other HDV camcorders, but if you’re into features the Sony Handycam HDR HC7 won’t disappoint.
The Sony Handycam Hdr-sr1 is the beginning of Sony’s venture into high-definition camcorder technology. It can record in 1080i or be switched to standard definition. The 30 GB hard drive will hold about four continuous hours in high definition mode. It has great video and audio quality while maintaining an easy to use interface and small design.
Filming in high definition has never been easier or prettier, than with the Sony HDR-UX7. It’s lightweight and records some pretty amazing videos for its small size. The Sony HDR-UX7 records directly to DVD blanks, making them easy to use with other media such as computers and Blu-ray players, however, this also means that you’ll have to swap out disks fairly often because high definition video fills up the mini-discs pretty fast.
After only a couple of years, the tape-based HDV format is beginning to hum its swansong - it was, after all, a transitional move between DV and high definition. Sony is still releasing HDV products, though, and the HDR-HC9E is the latest in a line of increasingly consumer-orientated cameras.
As AVCHD grabs an increasing share of the HD camcorder market, it's encouraging to see Sony providing the HDR-SR12 with a microphone input and dedicated headphone output, in addition to enabling full specification 1920 x 1080i high-definition video recording to a choice of either 120GB hard disk or Memory Stick Pro Duo.
This makes the TG3 a camera that's likely to be on the move a lot, and fortunately it's built tostand up to it. The case is made of titanium, which means it should cope with a few bumps and scrapes. Because it records to flash memory, there's no fragile hard disk or other moving parts, but you need to take care of the lens.
Sony's impressive new HDR-TG3 is a slim, highly portable camcorder that uses flash memory cards to record and replay high-definition movies and stills. Dubbed by its maker as 'the perfect partner for nights our or weekends away', it's not difficult to work out who this titanium-bodied solid-state camera is aimed at. It's small enough to fit into a smallish pocket or bag, yet comes with a range of features that would be hard to find on comparably small standard-definition models.
The excellent picture quality of the Canon Hv-10 puts this HDV camcorder in a league of its own. The compact camcorder is held vertically, weights just over one pound and includes a built-in light and flash. To some the design may seem awkward but it doesn’t take much to get used to, especially since all the buttons are conveniently located in the appropriate places.
