Maintain the beauty of your log home by having a long-lasting protection from dirt and elements. You can do this my means of regular cleaning, treating and refinishing all the areas covered. When you perform these maintenance procedures, you must give more attention to your exterior walls since they are more exposed to dust, heat, moisture and other destructive environmental elements.

Here are some ways to apply an effective maintenance for your log home and deck:

  • Cleaning Process

Clean any surface thoroughly free from dirt and residue to prepare for the finish that will be applied. While some people use a bleaching solution in cleaning, maintenance experts do not recommend this. They say that chlorine in bleach damages the glue that adhere the cells of the logs together.

Instead of using bleach, Timber Wash and Timber Brite are advised by experts for cleaning purposes. Apply the solution thru a plastic garden sprayer, then, rinse well with a pressure washer. Make sure that you are not too aggressive in your pressure washing to the extent of damaging the outer layer of the wood; otherwise, it will create wood fibers that need to be removed from the finish to get a strong adhesion.

  • Treating the Wood

Treatment process is important to keep the logs from unexpected deterioration. The removal of mold, mildew, water stains and discolored wood fibers is required to keep the wood durable. Apply a neutralizer and brightener for gray or weathered wood with no finished applied.

  • Application of a New Finish

Before you apply the finish, you must remove any remaining old finish by a stripping solution. Mix water and the solution to wash the area before finishing.

Exterior finish must have tint or color to protect the wood from sun rays. You can also coat clear exterior finish to protect the wood from mold, mildew and bugs.

For interior finish, you can use the clear type. It is also applicable to apply an oil-based product which dries up easily in a short period of time. This is necessary since interior walls are often touched with hands.

Once you follow these maintenance tips, you can be assured to have a log home that is always looking new and neat in its appearance. Further, you can save more in a regular and preventive maintenance than a complete renovation caused by sudden deterioration. You will be happy to see your log home maintaining its beauty unfazed by the effects of the environment and years of existence.
