Tiling a Wall Oakland CA

A beautifully tiled shower or unique kitchen backsplash can revitalize a room, and truthfully, it is a look you can achieve by following a few relatively simple steps. While it may be a little trickier than installing tile on the floor, tiling a wall can still be a do-it-yourself project. All it takes is some time, patience, and a willingness to understand the basics of installing tile.

Before beginning, have a chat with the experts at your local hardware or home improvement store. They can help you to understand what kind of wall you'll be installing the tile on, what preparation is necessary for your wall, and which products and materials will best fit your project needs. Once you've chosen your tile, tile setting adhesive, and grout, gathered all your tools, and prepped your walls, just follow the directions below.

  1. Starting in the center of your wall, use a carpenter's level to mark vertical and horizontal reference lines. Dry fit a row of tiles, and make any necessary adjustments to the vertical reference line, with the goal of avoiding unnecessary tile cutting.
  2. Again starting in the center of the wall, use the smooth side of a notched trowel to apply the tile setting adhesive to an area about 3-feet by 3-feet square. Then, use the notched side to create ridges in the adhesive.
  3. Begin to place your tile, pressing firmly to ensure good contact with the setting adhesive. Remember to use tile spacers as you go along, to keep your grout lines consistent.
  4. Continue to work in 3-feet by 3-feet sections until all of your tile has been placed.
  5. Allow the adhesive to set up or dry according to the manufacturer's instructions (usually overnight).
  6. Remove all of the tile spacers and mix your grout according the manufacturer's instructions.
  7. Using a rubber float, apply the grout. Press firmly at a 45-degree angle to ensure the grout gets into all the small spaces. Again, work in 3-feet by 3-feet sections until you've covered the entire area.
  8. Use a damp sponge to remove excess grout. After the grout has had some time to dry, go over the tile again with the damp sponge to remove any grout haze.
  9. Allow the grout to dry completely according to the manufacturer's instructions.

If your tile is in a kitchen or bathroom, you may want to caulk the edges where the tile meets bathtubs or countertops. In addition, applying a good grout sealer will help to avoid staining and mildew.

All in all, if you have the right materials, enough patience, and can pay attention to the details, you can tile a wall this weekend!
