Your toddler is becoming more aware of what she can or can't do yet (this can be when tantrums begin). Be patient and enjoy your time with your older toddler. Have fun with the ideas below:

    • Praise your child when she cooperates.
    • Have lots of two way conversations with him to encourage language development. They'll know if you're not listening! Avoid responding with just "uh huh"  - they need complete sentences with lots of rich language to learn.
    • Finger paint and scribble with big crayons.
    • Play lots of music and dance with your toddler.
    • Provide a variety of toys such as push and pull ones so your toddler can develop her coordination skills.
    • Use some nesting objects (that fit inside one another) to develop their knowledge of space and size.
    • Sing songs to your toddler which have actions to them. For example, "where is thumbkin" is a good one.
    • Use wooden blocks to work on your toddler's fine motor skills. Build towers together and knock them over.
    • Look at  books without any words so your child can help you tell the story. Just ask them simple questions like, "what is up in the sky?"
    • Sand play is great for this age. They learn about filling up things, dumping, and digging. Interestingly, all these activities lead to an understanding about rather complicated concepts such as volume, depth, height and weight.
