If you want to complete a building project on a budget, you may have considered buying used building parts. It's inexpensive, great for the environment, and easy to do. Follow these steps to learn how to find used building parts.

STEP 1:

Look in the yellow pages. Another way to find used building parts is to look in your local yellow pages. Under the section titled 'Building Materials', look for a company or retailer that stocks used building parts. Again, you may be better off to visit the location as stock moves quickly.

STEP 2:

Talk to demolition contractors. Businesses that specialize in the demolition of buildings likely remove a large part of the used building parts before demolishing it. You can contact these companies and ask them what they do with their salvaged or used building parts. You may be able to find used building parts with a quick phone call to a demolition company, but be prepared to move quickly. They don't usually store used building parts so they'll want to get the used building parts off of their hands quickly.

STEP 3:

Contact your historic salvage society. If you're lucky, your community may have an historical salvage society that works to salvage used building parts from historic buildings. You may need to do some travelling to locate these types of societies, but the quality of the used building parts is often worth it. Plus, you'll find used building parts that aren't available any more, which will definitely add some character to your building project.

STEP 4:

Visit online forums. Many chat rooms and forums exist for the exchange of used building parts. Visit Recycler's Exchange or Freecycle and browse through the postings. It may take a bit of digging, but you should be able to find some cheap (if not free!) used building parts.

STEP 5:

Post an ad in the paper. People in your community may have heaps of used building parts just sitting around. Post an ad in your local newspaper (or online classifieds site like Craigslist) mentioning what used building parts you're in the market for. You'll have a few responses within the day, and you'll definitely be able to get used building parts at a fraction of the price of new ones.
