Vinyl Fencing

Vinyl fencing is a popular choice in residential fencing because it is durable and almost maintenance free. It is a relative newcomer to the fencing industry and comes in a wide variety of designs. Made from rigid polyvinyl chloride (PVC), vinyl fencing is manufactured to look like rail fencing, conventional wood fencing, or iron fencing. In addition to the low-level maintenance regimen, vinyl fencing usually comes with lengthy manufacturer warranties.

Vinyl fencing is manufactured using two methods: mono-extrusion and co-extrusion.

Mono-extrusion, or single-layer, fence styles are made from one layer of material. Ultraviolet inhibitors are put all the way through the material in the extrusion process. Because only one extruder is used in this process, mono-extruded fencing is easier to make. However, more ultraviolet inhibitors, the most expensive ingredient of the fence, are needed, which vastly increases material costs. Therefore, mono-extruded vinyl fencing is often more expensive to purchase and install.

Co-extrusion, or two-layer, fencing is made from an outer layer which contains ultraviolet inhibitors, and an inner layer which has reduced protection. While it costs more in equipment and training to produce, it significantly decreases material costs. Therefore, co-extruded vinyl fencing is slightly cheaper for the homeowner.
