Originally published at Internet.comWebCFG (Web-Config) is targeted to system administrators and/or anyone who needs to be able to edit text files-such as typical configuration files-on servers. WebCFG operates as a Web front-end editor for such files; it interprets specially designed commands and directives that administrators embed within the configuration files themselves (as comments) and produces browser-based forms enabling the manipulation of settings within the files. The product is Java based, a Web application requiring a servlet container such as Apache Tomcat, Mortbay Jetty, JBoss AS, Glassfish, BEA Weblogic, or IBM Websphere. The product download includes the Sun JDK 5 and Apache Tomcat 5.
As aforementioned, system administrators can customize how the configuration file data is presented for editing within the application by adding specially designed comment lines within the configuration files themselves. The addition of widgets including text boxes, input fields, and radio buttons are all possible; and additional comments in the configuration files can also be displayed as descriptions on the resulting editing page. Depending on the version of the application licensed (more below), one or multiple configuration files for differing applications can be edited, from local or remote locations, and by company employees or external guests.
In addition to the ability to edit a configuration file, the utility can also be configured to execute specific scripts when the configuration has been changed (such as restarting/reloading the application in question). Executed scripts can be passed designated parameters and have the ability to analyze return values/exit codes and check system values. The Professional version additionally supports ssh, rexec and rsh.
Authentication is supported for multiple mechanisms, including directly assigned user names/passwords (within the utility's configuration file itself); or authentication against a POP3, IMAP, SSH, or LDAP/AD server.
Other product features include the ability to split a configuration file into different tabs; the ability to set a portion of a configuration file as read-only; the ability to mask a portion of the config file; and the ability to add custom CSS.
A free version of the platform is available, which is limited to a single configuration file on a local server and basic authentication (user/password in the WebCFG configuration file). Paid versions of the application include Basic (adds support for multiple config files on one local server, custom styles, and all authentication methods above except for LDAP) for $195; Pro (adds support for remote server configuration, real-time data, and LDAP authentication) for $588; and Enterprise (adds support for unlimited CSS and external guest access) for $876. A free full-function trial version is also available, which reverts to the free version after 30 days.
