2. Wigs and Hairpieces

Wigs are artificial coverings for the human head. They consist of hair that is interwoven into a fine network. The hair used may be synthetic or human. There are various styles for men and women, available in a wide range of options. The reasons why a person may decide to use a wig are equally numerous. The most common are hair loss by cancer patients undergoing radiation and chemotherapy treatments (cancer patient wigs), the need to cover up natural hair that is naturally thin or falling of and the whimsical desire to experience outrageous hairstyles.

3. Classes of Wigs

The first class is the partial coverage wig, also known as a hairpiece or wiglet. This type of wig adds air to specific parts of a person’s head. Partial wigs are built on either mesh-like foundations or come in the wefts attached to elastic pieces or combs for simple placement on the head. These give an illusion of ling hair, eliminating the fuss attached to having a full wig.

Full-cap wigs make use of elasticized mesh bases. Fastening is achieved by hand tying the wig. They are dense, making a good choice for people with little natural hair. The front edge of this type of wig makes use of special material resembling the wearer’s scalp. Under knotting conceals the wig’s base, accentuating the natural look. The open-cap or cap-less wig is made from wefts of various hair types, stitched in circular fashion on elastic strips, forming a cap-like form for wear. The spaces in the wiglet ensure it blends with a person’s natural hair.

4. Natural versus Synthetic

Even though it seems a non-issue at face value, people pull out their hair over it. Thanks to technology, the fibers used today look much more convincing than what was used previously. Trained eyes even have problem making the distinction between the real and the synthetic. There is one easy foolproof method though. Simply pull out one strand from the wig and expose it to fire. Natural hair burns slowly, giving off a distinct odor. The synthetic kind either melts and/or balls up on immediate exposure to fire. More tellingly, synthetic hair does not give off any odor.
