The WysDM for Backups platform is deployed alongside the existing backup infrastructure and adds to it analysis capabilities tailored to the status of the backup platform; including monitoring of existing backup components with alert capabilities, reporting for service level agreement, compliance, and chargeback purposes, and predictive analysis for proactive backup planning and configuration.

The agentless architecture of the platform (Collector agents are available for specific remote scenarios such as gathering data from low-bandwidth branch offices or areas with specific firewall restrictions) relies on the vendor's Cross-Domain (servers, applications, switches, and storage devices) Correlation technology to form a "WysDM Data Mine," which is formed through communicative techniques and queries including SNMP, LDAP, and XML. This Data Mine is continuously updated, providing the informational basis for the remaining analytic and reporting functions.

The Data Mine is analyzed by the vendor's Predictive Analysis Engine, or PAE. The PAE correlates the collected data from device to application to server to arrive at reporting and alerting metrics for the generation of alerts and or targeted reports. Such metrics could, for example, represent a single component failure or capacity warning; or potential compliance violations such as incorrect retention settings for completed backups.

Finally, for the presentation of data, the product supports included reports, user-customizable reports, SNMP traps, user alerts (E-mail, pager), and 3rd party tool integration via an XML API. According to the vendor, WysDM for Backups supports backup apps including Avamar Axion, EMC/Legato NetWorker, HP DataProtector, IBM Tivoli Storage Manager, Symantec Veritas BackupExec and Symantec Veritas NetBackup; as well as "non-traditional" backup applications such as NetApp's SnapVault and Oracle's Recovery Manager.

New in the latest release of WysDM for Backups is automatic reconciliation of backup failures against known criteria, and support for three additional backup apps: CommVault Galaxy, Symantec PureDisk and CA ARCserve.

WysDM for Backups is available now, with a base price of $15,000 for 50 clients (clients are the individual hosts that are being backed up by the targeted backup application). Contact WysDM Software for further information.Author: EITPlanet Staff
